ČSÚ: 2020 saw far fewer marriages in Czechia due to pandemic

Last year some 45,400 marriages were registered in the Czech Republic, about 9,500 fewer than in 2019, due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was the fourth-lowest number of marriages since 1918, the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ) said.

Meanwhile, the average age of newlyweds continues to rise. Whereas in 2001, about 23 percent of people marrying were under the age of 25, by 2020, the percentage had fallen to 4 percent.

Over the same period, the proportion of men over 40 getting married rose to 32 percent from 15 percent and in the case of women to 24 percent from 10 percent. In one out of every 10 marriages, at least one of the parties is a foreigner.
