The health authorities have expressed concern with regard to a sudden upsurge in new Covid-19 cases in the districts of Českolipsko, Šumperk a Český Krumlov.

While in the rest of the country the epidemic is slowing with an average 35 new cases per 1,000 inhabitants in these three districts the number of new cases has risen to 100 per 100,000.

Experts say there is a high probability the spike is due to the spread of the Indian mutation in these areas. Samples from the regions are being sequenced by the National Laboratory and the results should be known within a week.

The Czech Republic is to receive a record number of Covid vaccines in June, but the health authorities are concerned about the growing lack of interest in getting inoculated among middle-aged and young people. As the epidemic slows the question of whether to get vaccinated is losing urgency and many young people are thinking twice about it.

The vaccine register opened to people over 30 this week of whom there are over 720,000; only around 100,000 have so far registered. The government says it will now target its inoculation campaign mainly at younger groups of the population. The Czech minister of foreign affairs, Jakub Kulhánek, has stressed that broad EU support in the case of the Vrbětice blasts is more important for the country than the number of Russian diplomats expelled by the allies.

In an interview for the German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung Mr.Kulhánek dismissed claims that the Czech government had bungled the call for EU support which led to only five EU member states backing their words with actions and expelling Russian diplomats in a show of solidarity.

“The broad support expressed was crucial for us, many Russian ambassadors were summoned for an explanation, this is not a race in expelling diplomats,” the Czech foreign minister said.

Mr. Kulhánek gave the interview during a visit to Germany where he met with the German foreign minister, Heiko Maas. Germany did not expel any Russian diplomats over the Vrbětice incident and was reported to have been taken aback by the fact that it had not been informed about the matter in advance.

The lower house of Parliament on Wednesday approved an amendment to the building law drafted by Regional Development Minister Klára Dostálová that aims to accelerate approvals on large construction projects. Currently, it takes an average of five years for can such projects to get all the necessary permits and approvals. The government says the aim is to shorten the process by at least a year.

The opposition parties have criticized the fact that the amendment will transfer all decision making to the state-run Supreme Building Authority which will be organized similarly to the tax authorities. The bill will now go to the Senate. It should come into force on July 1, 2023.
