The Czech Republic is close to achieving herd immunity and it makes sense to stop covering the cost of Covid-19 tests from health insurance as of September, biochemist Zdeněk Hostomský said in an interview for CNN Prima News.
According to health statistics over 1.7 million Czechs have undergone Covid-19 and over 4 million people are now fully vaccinated. Hostomský moreover argues that the actual number of people who have contracted the virus in the past year is likely to be much higher.
Hostomský says the main problem now is that over half a million people aged over 65 are not vaccinated, which is reason to continue to observe the strict hygiene measures in place and push ahead with vaccinations. The Czech Republic has 10.6 million inhabitants.

The Tábor Zoo has caught the last two of seven bison, which escaped from their enclosure after a heavy storm damaged the fence a week ago. All of the animals are unhurt. Five of the bison were located fairly soon and driven back to their enclosure, but two remained hidden in a nearby forest where they spent a week in the wild. Police monitored the area and nearby roads where the animals could appear unexpectedly.
The European bison is an endangered species. It is estimated that there are approximately 7,500 of them left in the world, half of them in the wild. The Tábor Zoo has been intensively involved in the breeding of European bison for several years.
