The government has decided that as of September, state health insurance will not cover preventive tests for Covid-19, which people need, for example, when travelling abroad, attending cultural events or eating in restaurants, Minister of Health Adam Vojtěch told reporters on Monday.
Children under 12 will have an exception, as no vaccination is currently approved for them. Covid-19 tests will also continue to be reimbursed to people who cannot be vaccinated for health reasons and to those who have had their first dose.
Meanwhile, more walk-in vaccination centres, such as at Nový Smíchov shopping centre in Prague, are being established in all regions. On Wednesday, they will open at malls in Ostrava and Brno, in addition to Liberec and Ústí nad Labem.

The Delta variant of the coronavirus constitutes between 70 to 80 percent of all infections in the Czech Republic, according to the Institute of Health Information and Statistics, based on data obtained during the last two weeks.
The British mutation, which was spreading in the Czech Republic mainly at the beginning of the year, now accounts for around 10 percent of Covid-19 cases. There have been only isolated cases of the South African and Brazilian variants.
Laboratories have also detected a case of the new Delta Plus variant, in the South Moravian region. Scientists have not yet reported on the characteristics of this mutation, so it is unclear if it is more contagious or marked by more severe symptoms.

The European Commission has officially endorsed the Czech Republic’s recovery and resilience plan, a key step towards the EU disbursing €7 billion in grants under the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The news came as EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Prague on Monday to discuss with Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and other government officials the bloc’s economic stimulus package.
The Czech Republic will receive the money from the EU’s extraordinary pandemic fund to support the implementation of crucial investment and reform measures outlined in the country’s recovery and resilience plan, helping the country emerge stronger from the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Czech plan forms part of an unprecedented coordinated EU response to the crisis, to address common European challenges by embracing the green and digital transitions, to strengthen economic and social resilience and the cohesion of the Single Market. The Commission’s analysis of the Czech plan considered, “in particular, whether the proposed investments and reforms support the green and digital transitions; contribute to effectively addressing challenges identified in the European Semester; and strengthen its growth potential, job creation and economic and social resilience.”

The quality of Czech surface and groundwater has not improved despite the state having allocated 2.7 billion crowns in European Union funds from 2013 to 2020 towards monitoring supplies and modernizing treatment plants, the Supreme Audit Office (SAO) said on Monday.
In some cases, the level of pesticides and nitrogenous substances in drinking water sources has even increased, the office said in a news release. However, the Ministry of Agriculture has rejected the conclusions, spokesman Vojtěch Bílý told ČTK, arguing that they are distorted and drinking water quality remains at a high level.

Mlékárna Hlinsko, a dairy company that is part of the Agrofert holding founded by the Czech prime minister filed a lawsuit in April with the Court of Justice of the European Commission over the suspension of subsidies based on Brussels’ audit of his possible conflict of interest.
According to the news server iRozhlas.cz, it is the second lawsuit filed by an Agrofert company over the European Commission’s finding that Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) is in a conflict of interest, despite having placed Agrofert into two trusts, as he remains the holding’s sole beneficiary.
MEPs voted overwhelmingly on June 10 to issue proceedings against Babiš for breaches of EU law regarding his conflict of interest. The non-binding resolution supported conclusions of the earlier European Commission audit.

One of the Czech Republic’s most iconic landmarks, the Charles Bridge in Prague, has once again been spray-painted with graffiti. The act of vandalism comes just a week after a teenage boy turned himself in to police for “tagging” parts of the historic bridge’s walls, a statue and a streetlight.
Police have asked possible witnesses to come forward with any information they may have to identify the perpetrator or perpetrators who spray-painted the base of a statue of John the Baptist over the weekend.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is visiting Prague on Monday to negotiate with Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) and other government officials about the size and scope of the bloc’s economic stimulus package.
The Czech Republic is likely to receive around 7 billion euros from the EU’s extraordinary pandemic fund based on a complete evaluation by the European Commission about the Czech part of the program.
Von der Leyen, who has already negotiated with more than half of the EU member states on the draft economic stimulus plan, is to discuss with Babiš details of the Czech strategy for allocating EU funds. However, 37 percent of the money must be allocated to the fight global warming and 20 percent to the digitization of the economy.
