    In their opening game at the Tokyo Olympics, the Czech basketball team managed to beat Iran 84:78. Patrik Auda led the scoring with 16 points. The team will face France in their second group game on Wednesday.

    In tennis, four Czech players have advanced into the second round of the Olympic Games. Roland Garros winner Barbora Krejčíková and Markéta Vondroušová won their opening games on Saturday, followed by Karolína Plíšková’s 6:1 6:3 victory against France’s Alizé Cornet on Sunday. Meanwhile, Petra Kvitová beat Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 6:4 6:3 on Sunday.

    Saturday saw 69 people test positive for COVID-19 in the Czech Republic, the lowest number of cases for a weekend day since the end of June. However, Health Ministry data shows that the number of hospitalised patients has risen since last weekend, with 40 people in hospital five of whom are in serious condition.The reproduction number fell to 0.84 on Sunday

    Saturday saw 32,464 people receive a dose of the coronavirus vaccine bringing the total of jabs administered in the Czech Republic up to 9.97 million.

    Police and hygienist checks in Prague’s bars and clubs on Friday night revealed that around 15 percent of the people breached coronavirus measures, the website of the Prague Hygiene Office reports.

    In total, roughly 170 people were checked 24 of whom had to pay CZK 12,000.in fines.

    The report states that the main rules being breached included failing to show evidence of being tested or vaccinated and not upholding social distancing rules.

    23 percent of Czechs do not want to get vaccinated against COVID-19, according to a freshly released June survey conducted by the Public Opinion Research Centre (CVVM). Meanwhile, 35 percent of respondents say that they will vaccinate themselves, with 7 percent replying that they are still unsure. The remaining individuals questioned by the survey said that they had already received at least one coronavirus vaccine dose.

    Although close to a quarter of all respondents said that they do not want the vaccine, their number is falling when compared to previous surveys. In February 33 percent of people said that they will not take the vaccine, falling to 26 percent in February.

    Saturday will see UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee discuss proposals for new additions to its heritage list. Among them is the “Great Spas of Europe” proposal, which would see 11 of Europe’s major spa towns become UNESCO sites. Included among them are the Czech spa towns of Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně and Františkovy Lázně.

    The Famous Spas of Europe nomination was put forward by the consultative organization ICOMOS (International Council of Monuments and Sites). Apart from the three Czech cities, spa towns from Germany, Austria, Italy, Belgium, France and Great Britain are also on the list.

    The Czech Republic will be hit by heavy storms accompanied by torrential rain, hailstorms and strong winds, the Hydrometeorological Institute warns. Storms are expected to hit the south of the country on Saturday. However, more serious storms are expected to take place from the night of Saturday to Sunday with up to 70km/h winds and 50mm of rainfall in some places.

    Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to range around 28 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

    After the new bloc of the Dukovany power plant is finished, up to two new blocs could subsequently be constructed at Czech Republic’s other, Temelín, nuclear power plant, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Vice-Premier Karel Havlíček said on Saturday during a tour of Temelin.

    The decision, Mr Havlíček said, will likely have to be made by the next government. A single new bloc at Temelín could produce up to 1,600 MW of power, according to the minister, and would be a stable source of energy following the shutting down of coal plants.

    Temelin is the largest nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic and covers around a fifth of domestic consumption.

    The Czech Republic registered 197 new cases of Covid-19 on Thursday, which is 29 less than on the same day a week ago. It is the first time in three weeks that the daily increase has dropped below the 200 mark. The reproduction number is at 0.93, The Czech Republic now has an average 14 new cases per week per 100,000 inhabitants. The government is pushing ahead with vaccinations, but Prime Minister Andrej Babiš announced earlier this week that he had no plans to make them compulsory.

    A museum documenting the history of the Lennon Wall in Prague opened to the public in Prague’s Lesser Quarter of Friday, July 23. Titled - The Lennon Wall Story – the museum is located in the basement below Napa bar in Malá Strana, and will be open to visitors on Fridays and weekends. The exhibition presents dozens of period photographs by famous as well as unknown authors, thematic publications, and a documentary film about the history of the Lennon Wall.

    The Lennon Wall, which stands near the capital’s Kampa Park, became a famous symbol of unofficial anti-communist resistance during the 1980s and a popular tourist site after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Over the years it underwent many changes and was on several occasions vandalized by graffiti artists.
