• Počerady coal-fired power plant biggest polluter of 2025

    According to European Commission data, the biggest polluter in Czechia last year was the Počerady coal-fired power plant, the Czech branches of Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace said. Počerady, which is in North Bohemia, emitted some 4.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2025.

    The environmental groups said eight of the 10 largest polluters in the Czech Republic were coal-fired power plants or heating plants; the other worst offenders in this regard were a refinery in Litvínov and a steelworks in Třinec.

  • Lower house committee for continuation of Radio Prague International

    The Media Committee of the Czech Chamber of Deputies says the stability and continuity of Czech Radio’s international broadcasting should be secured through the budget of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

    In a statement after a hearing on the matter, the committee said maintaining this funding would help preserve the country’s international communication policy.

    The Ministry of Foreign Affairs finances Radio Prague International and Minister Petr Macinka has reduced its budget by a quarter this year. He says it will be cut completely from next year.

  • President Pavel and defence minister Zůna to discuss new army chief candidates

    President Petr Pavel will meet Defence Minister Jaromír Zůna on Wednesday to discuss candidates for the next chief of the general staff. The talks will take place at Prague Castle and will also cover current defence issues, with no media briefing planned. Pavel has said he has no clear favourite and expects the government to submit nominations. Zůna has indicated there are four candidates under consideration, though he has not disclosed their names.

    The government could make its selection in May. The current chief, Karel Řehka, has held the post since 2022, with a typical term lasting four years.

  • PM Babiš heads to Uzbekistan after Kazakhstan talks

    Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO Party) is continuing his Central Asia tour, travelling to Uzbekistan after meetings in Kazakhstan. In Astana, he is due to meet President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev following earlier talks with Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov. Accompanied by Industry Minister Karel Havlíček and a business delegation, Babiš is focusing on economic cooperation, including energy supplies, while also criticising the EU’s Green Deal.  In Uzbekistan, he will attend a business forum with Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov and later meet President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Babiš, leader of the ANO movement, will also visit projects linked to education and healthcare as Czech firms explore new opportunities.

  • Fuel price cap to rise again in Czechia

    State-set maximum fuel prices in Czechia will increase again on Wednesday, according to the Ministry of Finance of the Czech Republic. The cap on diesel will rise by 0.52 CZK to 44.15 CZK per litre, while petrol will be allowed to sell for up to 42.79 CZK per litre, up by 0.24 CZK. The government bases the limits on wholesale price averages from companies such as Čepro, Orlen and MOL, along with market data and taxes. The pricing system will remain in place through May, though it does not apply to premium fuels.

  • Czech flag day added to list of national observances

    President Petr Pavel has signed a law introducing Czech Flag Day on March 30 as a new national observance. The proposal, put forward by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Radek Vondráček, aims to highlight the national flag as a symbol of sovereignty and identity. The date marks the adoption of the Czechoslovak flag in 1920. The Senate had proposed a broader focus on all state symbols instead, but this was not approved. Unlike public holidays, the observance will remain a regular working day.

  • Czech defence strategy to prioritise troop recruitment

    Czech Defence Minister Jaromír Zůna (Motorists Party) is finalising a new military development strategy through 2040, expected to be presented in May. The plan aims to meet NATO capability targets while reflecting national priorities. According to Zůna, the immediate focus will be on recruiting professional soldiers, supported by stronger demographic cohorts in the coming years. After 2030, when population trends are expected to worsen, the strategy may shift toward other priorities. Defence spending is also set to rise, as Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO Party) acknowledged the country currently falls short of NATO’s two-percent-of-GDP benchmark. Opposition parties plan to raise the issue in parliament.

  • Czech NHL players in spotlight as playoffs intensify

    Czech players again played key roles in the NHL playoffs, though with mixed fortunes. Goaltender Daniel Vladař conceded a decisive and unusual goal as his Philadelphia side lost 2–3 in Pittsburgh, allowing the series to tighten to 3–2. The puck rebounded off the boards and deflected off Vladař into his own net, marking another difficult moment after a previous costly error. Meanwhile, Karel Vejmelka faced heavy pressure as Utah lost 4–5 in overtime to Vegas despite a remarkable comeback from 0–3. Forward Tomáš Hertl featured for the Golden Knights, contributing limited ice time as the series was levelled.
