Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš met for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Yerevan on Sunday, their first in-person meeting since Mr. Babiš took office in December.

Before departing for Armenia, Babiš declined to comment on the topics of the talks, saying he would comment on the meeting afterwards. His last meeting with the Ukrainian head of state took place in Kyiv in 2019.

The bilateral talks were held one day before the summit of the European Political Community, which both leaders are due to attend.

During the summit, Babiš also plans to hold talks with other European leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Serbian Prime Minister Djuro Macut and Moldovan President Maia Sandu.

The Convoy of Liberty drove through the west Bohemian city of Plzeň on Sunday within the Freedom Festival commemorating the end of World War Two and the city’s liberation by the US Army in May 1945.

As in previous years, crowds lined the roughly two-kilometre route, waving Czech, American and Belgian flags and holding sprigs of blooming lilac, the flowers with which residents also welcomed their liberators 81 years ago.

The place of honour in the convoy, and the loudest applause from spectators, went to two American veterans attending this year’s celebrations – 100-year-old Joseph Thurmond and 101-year-old Gideon Kantor.

Sunday’s convoy, showcasing some 300 pieces of historic military equipment, marked the end of the festival’s weekend program, which included historic military camps and cultural events. From Monday, a series of commemorative ceremonies will take place at monuments, memorials and plaques across the city, culminating on May 6 with the main remembrance gathering at the Thank You, America! memorial on Americká Avenue.

Investigators repeatedly secured forensic evidence and obtained video footage showing two men. However, police said the identities of those captured on camera could not be established. The safe was later discovered around 100 metres from the embassy in Nad Šárkou Street. Nothing was missing from its contents. The investigation was later suspended.

Police described the case as the most significant security incident involving diplomatic property in recent years.

The Czech Republic recorded its first summer day of the year on Saturday with temperatures crossing the 25 degrees Celsius mark. Temperatures on Sunday could climb to as high as 30 degrees Celsius, especially in the Polabí region, the Czech Hydrometeorological Office reported.

If that threshold is reached, it would rank among the earliest tropical days ever recorded in the country.

Data from 1961 to 2025 show that the first tropical day usually occurs around the 145th day of the year, i.e. in late May.

Karlovy Vary International Airport could in future be transformed into a military airport with civilian operations. The state is expected to help finance the expansion and extension of the runway, which is currently too short for larger passenger aircraft.

The planned investment would exceed one billion crowns. Debate over stronger state involvement intensified during Prime Minister Andrej Babiš’s visit to Azerbaijan, where he discussed natural gas supplies with President Ilham Aliyev. Speaking after a business forum in Gabala, Babiš said the government could assist the Karlovy Vary region with the runway project.
