Oscar winner Pavel Talankin's Academy Award is missing after TSA officials at John F Kennedy International Airport refused to let him board a flight to Germany with the statuette. Talankin says he had the Oscar in his carry-on bag for the flight, but airport security made him check it into the luggage compartment saying the award could be used as a weapon. Upon arrival at Frankfurt Airport the statuette could not be found.

Lufthansa airlines, which helped Talankin pack the award in a box for the flight, says their team is doing everything possible to locate it. The film’s director David Borenstein has questioned the decision of security staff, asking whether it had anything to do with the fact that Pavel Talankin is not an international celebrity actor and does not speak fluent English.

Talankin is a Russian primary school teacher who filmed the material for Mr. Nobody Against Putin during classes, documenting the rise of pro-war militarized propaganda in Russian schools. The unique recordings were turned into a Czech–Danish documentary, which won an Oscar for Best Documenary Feature Film.

The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied claims that it rejected a request to allow an aircraft carrying Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te to cross Czech airspace.

TaiwanNews reported that President Lai had planned to visit Eswatini in April and after three African countries reportedly withdrew overflight permissions, Taipei sought to salvage the trip by securing clearance from European states. The news agency claims both the Czech Republic and Germany rejected the request after pressure from China. The official visit was ultimately cancelled.

Czech Foreign Ministry spokesman Adam Čörgő told the Czech News Agency that Prague had not received any such request from Taiwan.

The Czech Republic is falling behind in the adoption of artificial intelligence in the workplace, with only 28% of people using AI on the job. In the most advanced countries, the figure is closer to 60%, according to the latest Microsoft AI Diffusion Report, presented at the “AI Skills for Public Administration II” conference.

To improve digital skills, the AI National Skilling Plan initiative was launched last year with the participation of Microsoft, the Government Office, the Labour Office, and the Czech Association for Artificial Intelligence. The initiative aims to help the public use AI safely, effectively, and in compliance with regulations.

Surveys indicate that while many Czechs do use some form of AI at work, a significant number do so without their employer’s knowledge. This so-called “shadow IT” raises concerns about potential data leaks and the security of sensitive information.

Plzeň in western Bohemia on Friday opens its traditional Freedom Festival, commemorating the end of the Second World War and the liberation of the city by American troops.

The city has organised the event since 1990, and for three decades American and Belgian veterans who helped liberate Plzeň in May 1945 have attended the celebrations as honoured guests.

This year, 81 years after the war’s end, two veterans are expected to attend: 100-year-old Joseph Thurmond and 101-year-old Gideon Kantor.

As in previous years, the festival will feature military history camps, jazz and swing concerts, country music and tribute bands performing songs by American groups.

The program also includes commemorative ceremonies at war memorials, a gathering of American car enthusiasts, and a mass for war veterans.

The week-long event will culminate with the festival’s main attraction, the Convoy of Liberty.

This year’s parade will include around 300 pieces of historic military equipment, led by a battle formation recreating the arrival of the 16th Armored Division led by General Patton.

Political rallies, festivals and gatherings took place around the country within the annual May Day celebrations.

Around 500 people joined a parade through central Prague within the Prague Majáles student festival, which was held for the twentieth time this year. The event traditionally culminates with the election of the Majáles king and queen.

More than 1,000 people joined an anti-fascist rally in the city centre, which passed without serious incidents.

In Czechia the holiday is also marked as a celebration of love and the welcoming of spring.

In the western city of Plzen, May Day marked the start of the annual Freedom Festival commemorating the end of the Second World War and the liberation of the city by American troops.

Overnight frosts that hit the Czech Republic have caused damage worth hundreds of millions of crowns to fruit growers, according to the Fruit Growers Union. The hardest-hit areas were in Bohemia, particularly its central and northern regions.

All types of fruit crops have been affected. A more precise assessment of the damage will be possible in the coming weeks, once flowering and pollination are complete, according to Martin Ludvík, head of the  Union.

Despite the losses, this year’s damage is not expected to reach the level seen in 2024, when April frosts led to the worst harvest in a century, with total damage estimated at around 1.3 billion crowns.
