Which are the most popular Czech Christmas cookies? We know!
With Christmas just around the corner, the eternal question arises: which cookies should we bake this year? If you’re still deciding, an ongoing survey on the popularity of traditional Czech Christmas cookies by Czech Radio might help!
The cookie survey is conducted using an interactive format where participants are presented with two types of cookies in a "duel" and asked to choose their favorite. Each selection counts as a vote, and the cookies accumulate victories based on these head-to-head matchups. This approach ensures a dynamic ranking system that reflects evolving preferences as more votes are cast.
Bee Hive (or vosí hnízdo), is currently dominating the rankings, winning an impressive 75% of duels out of 7,561 matchups so far. This no-bake treat, filled with creamy goodness, remains a festive favorite across generations.
Vanilla crescent and linzer cookie close behind
The runner-up is the classic Vanilla Crescent (or Vanilkový rohlíček), achieving 73% of victories. This delicate cookie, with its unmistakable vanilla aroma, is a staple of Czech Christmas traditions. Sharing the same percentage is the Linecké kolečko (Linzer Cookie), which has triumphed in 7,686 duels so far.
Other popular choices
For those craving something a bit different, the Coconut Ball (58% wins) and Decorated Gingerbread (56% wins) are excellent options. Fans of richer flavors might enjoy the Išelské dortíčky (Ischl Tarts) or Pracna (Traditional Spiced Cookies), both of which are holding steady in the top 10.
Falling behind: the least popular treats
Not all cookies managed to charm the voters. Marzipan and Snow Pastries are currently at the bottom of the list, with only 24% and 22% of victories, respectively. While less popular, these treats still hold a special place for some with particular tastes and traditions.
Inspiration for your Christmas baking
The poll is ongoing, so the rankings may still change as more people cast their votes. Two years ago, a Czech Radio survey explored the nation’s favorite ingredients for Christmas Eve potato salad. While staples like potatoes, pickles, eggs, mayonnaise, and carrots dominated, there were surprises—some participants even debated the inclusion of potatoes!
The survey also highlighted subtle regional differences. For instance, cooks in the Vysočina Region embraced more experimental ingredients, while the Pilsen Region showed a preference for adding meat like ham or salami.
