Tennis:  Czech women Plíšková, Kvitová and Vondroušová win first US Open matches

Women’s top seed Karolína Plíšková recorded a straight sets win on the first day of the US Open, as the year’s second Grand Slam tennis tournament got underway in New York on Monday. The Czech champion recorded a convincing 6-4, 6-0 win over Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina.

Plíšková’s compatriot and No.6 seed Petra Kvitová posted her first win of the Tour resumption in the first round, beating Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania 6-3, 6-2 in 62 minutes.

No.12 seed Markéta Vondroušová also made quick work of her opponent, dispatching Greet Minnen of Belgium, 6-1, 6-4. Meanwhile, Czech players Marie Bouzková and Tereza Martincová are out following close loses.
