Kvitová out of Australian Open, Krejčíková advances into third round
Czechia’s two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová is out of the Australian Open after losing to Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina 5:7 4:6 in the second round of the Grand Slam on Wednesday. Meanwhile, last year’s quarterfinalist and number 20 seed, Barbora Krejčíková, beat her opponent Clara Burel 6:4 6:1 and will face Kvitová’s opponent Kalinina in the upcoming third round on Friday. Krejčíková is currently the highest seeded Czech player still in the tournament.
Wednesday is set to see four more Czechs play at the first Grand Slam of the year. Karolína Muchová will challenge American Danielle Collins and Markéta Vondroušová will be finish her first round duel with American Alison Riske-Amritraj. In the men’s category, Jiří Lehečka will face American Christopher Eubanks and Dalibor Svrčina will try to beat Yoshihito Nishioka from Japan.
