Annual inflation in Czechia accelerated to 2.5 percent in October from 2.3 percent in September, the Czech Statistical Office confirmed, matching its preliminary estimate from last week. The increase was driven mainly by higher food prices. Month-on-month, consumer prices rose by 0.5 percent. “The development of consumer prices in October was again significantly affected by food and non-alcoholic beverages, which accelerated their year-on-year growth to 3.6 percent. Compared to the previous month, their prices rose by 1.1 percent,” said Pavla Šedivá, head of the consumer price statistics department at the Czech Statistical Office.

The coalition council of the emerging government of ANO, the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD), and the Motorists’ parties meets this morning to discuss mainly the state budget, said ANO deputy chairman Karel Havlíček. He warned that each day the outgoing cabinet delays resubmitting the draft budget increases the risk that the country will start next year under a provisional one. Havlíček again criticized the outgoing government’s proposal as “in disarray.” ANO leader Andrej Babiš claims it lacks over 100 billion crowns. Outgoing Prime Minister Petr Fiala (Civic Democrats) rejects the accusations, saying Babiš is trying to divert attention from his own conflict of interest.

Vít Krejčí set a new Czech record in the NBA (National Basketball Association) by scoring 28 points and sinking eight three-pointers, helping the Atlanta Hawks defeat the Los Angeles Clippers 105–102. The previous Czech record, 27 points, was set nearly six years ago by Tomáš Satoranský, who achieved it for Chicago in a game against Atlanta.

Krejčí’s previous career high was 20 points, achieved in January against Toronto. Only two players this NBA season — Grayson Allen of Phoenix and Aaron Gordon of Denver — have hit more three-pointers in a single game, with ten each.

A Russian court has sentenced a Czech woman in absentia to 13 years in prison for allegedly fighting on the side of Ukraine, the Investigative Committee - Russia’s main federal criminal authority - announced on Monday. Investigators claim the 24-year-old served in Ukraine’s 59th Brigade from November 2023 to June 2024 and was convicted under Russian law of mercenary participation in an armed conflict, as she allegedly received payment.

The spokesperson for the Czech Foreign Ministry, Daniel Drake, said the Ministry is closely monitoring the case and he questioned the independence of Russia’s judiciary, citing political influence and a lack of rule of law.

The number of self-employed entrepreneurs in Czechia rose by 27,000 in the first three quarters of this year, reaching a record 1.182 million, according to the Czech Social Security Administration (ČSSZ). For comparison, last year the total number of self-employed — including private doctors, artists, or farmers — grew by 28,000 over the entire year. Most self-employed people are registered in Prague (222,000), followed by the Central Bohemia region (168,000) and South Moravia (132,000).

Despite the record figures, the Czech News Agency notes that the increase does not only indicate stronger entrepreneurial activity, but also a rise in cases where workers are officially self-employed while effectively functioning as regular employees. It also adds that no other EU country relies on small businesses as heavily as Czechia, where firms with one to nine employees make up over 95% of all businesses and are the largest employer in  the country.
