President Petr Pavel has begun a two-day visit to the Karlovy Vary region in western Czechia. On the first day, he pointed out that since his previous visit last June, a public university has still not been established in the region. According to the Czech News Agency, the Karlovy Vary Region has long sought to establish its own university, as many students who leave the region for higher education do not return, deepening the area’s educational disadvantage.
The president also added that he is currently meeting with candidates for ministerial positions in the incoming government and welcomed suggestions from representatives of the Karlovy Vary Region on issues he could raise with them.

Likely next prime minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) says that next year’s budget, prepared by the outgoing government, is missing over CZK 85 billion (EUR 3.5 billion) in spending and includes CZK 15 billion (EUR 620 million) in “inflated” or non-existent revenue. He made the claims in a video posted on social media on Sunday. The outgoing government has rejected the criticism.
ANO deputy chair Alena Schillerová said earlier last week that the draft budget lacks CZK 38 billion (EUR 1.6 billion) for transport infrastructure and CZK 32 billion (EUR 1.3 billion) for legally required expenses. Babiš claims the outgoing government is avoiding resubmitting the budget to parliament to conceal these gaps, while outgoing Prime Minister Petr Fiala (Civic Democratic Party) responded on X that Babiš is deflecting attention from the fact that ANO has no budget draft of its own and will need a large deficit to fund its “unrealistic election promises.”

Unemployment in the Czech Republic rose to 4.6% at the end of October, up from 4.5% in September, the Czech Labour Office reported. The number of unemployed increased by 2,584 to 340,509, while the number of available jobs fell by nearly 2,000. The rise reflects normal seasonal adjustments after the summer, according to the Labour Office, which also noted that it is particularly difficult for older job seekers to find new employment, and that an influx of university graduates continues to affect the labour market.
On average, there are 3.6 unemployed people per available job, with the highest ratio in Karviná, where there are 22.4 job seekers per vacancy. The largest number of job openings continues to be in Prague and the Central Bohemia region.
