The police management does not consider the selected means of the police protest planned for November 4 to November 8 appropriate, although it backs the protest as such, police chief Martin Vondrášek told the ctk news agency. The Union of the Security Forces said this week that because officers are not allowed to strike, they would protest by not issuing fines and responding later than usual to calls where lives are not in danger.
The police has complained about a lack of money for operations and salaries. The force is currently short of nearly 2,400 police officers and 1,000 firefighters. Many members of the force are considering leaving.

As of this month Czech companies will for the first time have to declare actual emissions from imported products in line with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The regulation adopted by the European Union started to apply to companies last October, when they had to start reporting emissions from imported products on a quarterly basis, but in a simplified way. The so-called carbon tariff (CBAM) aims to equalize the price of carbon emissions between domestic and imported products.

The very last Czech Airlines (CSA) flight bearing the familiar brand OK landed at Prague Airport just before 11 pm on Saturday. The flight was fully-booked by aviation enthusiasts and former CSA employees who gave the pilot a hearty round of applause as the plane hit the tarmac. A crowd of onlookers watched its the arrival from the airport's observation deck. Many were checking flight progress data on their phones and jostling for position to take pictures.
From Sunday, CSA, which is one of the five oldest air carriers in the world, will become just another brand in the portfolio of the Smartwings group. In ticketing systems or on departure boards, flights will be marked with the QS code used by Smartwings. However, the OK brand name and the traditional colours of CSA will remain on the aircrafts that are in operation.
Czech Airlines was founded in 1923 as Czechoslovak State Airlines. In 2013, due to financial difficulties, Korean Air joined CSA, holding 44 percent of shares. In February 2018, Smartwings became the majority owner.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala now has an account on the Chinese app TikTok, Václav Smolka, head of the government’s press department informed reporters. Smolka said security concerns had been adequately addressed. The government’s press spokesman said that at least two million young Czechs are on TikTok today and the prime minister feels it is important to use all available communication channels to to present the government’s policy and priorities to them.

The 28th edition of the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival opened in Jihlava on Friday evening with the world premiere of the documentary “The President” mapping the five-year tenure of the former Slovak head of state Zuzana Čaputová. The highly anticipated document will be screened four more times during the festival so as to satisfy viewer demand. It will premiere in Czech and Slovak cinemas on November 14. The ten-day festival will offer visitors 340 films, many of them world premieres.

The Šumava National Park will enable controlled shooting of wolves on its territory should the need arise, Jan Dvořák, spokesman for the Šumava National Park, informed journalists. However this could only be done by authorized hunters under strict conditions, such as if the wolves lose their shyness and become dangerous to humans. A contingency plan issued by the Ministry of the Environment determines the exact procedure for keeping problematic wolves in check. They could be monitored, scared off, trapped or even shot in extreme situations. Monitoring shows that there are now eight wolf packs living in Šumava. The low-end estimate is 30 wolves, including cubs.

Sunday, October 27, marks the end of Daylight Saving Time around Europe. At 3 am on Sunday, clocks will be turned back one hour to local standard time, or winter time. The time shift will affect the schedule of international trains and busses. Express trains passing through the country will take an hour-long break on the border. Winter time will be in force for the next five months, until the last Sunday in March 2025. A STEM/MARK survey indicates that two-thirds of Czechs are not satisfied with the regular switch between daylight saving time and standard time.

From Sunday, CSA, which is one of the five oldest air carriers in the world, will become just another brand in the portfolio of the Smartwings group. In ticketing systems or on departure boards, flights will be marked with the QS code used by Smartwings. However, the OK brand name and the traditional colours of CSA will remain on the aircrafts that are in operation. The same livery will also be given to four smaller Airbus A220-300s, the first two of which are due for delivery later this year and another two due to be delivered in the first half of 2025.

A two-day strike by outpatient specialists and GPs planned for next week has been called off after negotiations with the Ministry of Health and health insurance companies. The protest was to have been held in protest against low reimbursements for health care in 2025 and an agreement on their increase was reached with the country’s four largest insurers on Friday. Health Minister Vlastimil Válek said the agreements were being finalized and would be signed next week. He said he would convince three other insurers to join the agreement as well. The four largest insurers represent 88 percent of clients.
