    Road maintenance workers and emergency crews were out in force overnight cleaning roads and renewing power to thousands of households affected by the snow calamity that hit southern Bohemia on Friday and Saturday. Over 10,000 households were left without power on Saturday and road and rail traffic was disrupted by snowdrifts, fallen trees and a heightened number of accidents. The Český Krumlov, Prachatice and Česke Budějovice regions were the hardest hit. According to local authorities the situation is slowly returning to normal.

    The main star of next year's Colours of Ostrava, the country’s largest and most popular music festival,  will be American singer Lenny Kravitz, the festival organizers revealed on Friday. His performance in Dolní Vítkovice will feature songs from his new album Blue Electric Light, which is scheduled for release in March 2024. Other star guests include Sam Smith and rock legend Queens of the Stone Age. The festival will take place from 17 to 20 July 2024.

    The Prague City Hall has banned a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Prague due to take place on December 5, because of the use of the controversial slogan "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free". The city hall authorities said the slogan was unacceptable since it implied the destruction of Israel.

    The Czech Ministry of the Interior has previously stated that shouting or holding up banners with this slogan may be considered a criminal offence. The organizers of the demonstration plan to file a lawsuit against Prague City Hall over the decision.

    At the COP28 climate conference in Dubai, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala voiced his country’s support for a declaration aiming to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050. The Czech head of government assured delegates to the summit that Czechia supports the goals of the Paris climate agreement and the EU's climate goals, including the goal of building a carbon-neutral economy by 2050. He stressed the importance of nuclear and renewable energy in seeking a balanced approach to greenhouse gas reduction that would not harm competitiveness. He said the Czech Republic is also ready to provide up to four million dollars (about 90 million crowns) over the next four years to a global fund to help developing countries fight climate change.

    Ambulances and fire fighter were out in force at Prague's Vaclav Havel Airport on Friday evening due to an emergency landing of a plane that reported a tire problem. The plane eventually managed to land safely.  Airport spokeswoman Klára Divíšková said the flight which reported problems was an A350 aircraft of the Spanish low-cost airline World2fly flying from Vietnam to Prague. Prague airport diverted several flights elsewhere because of the emergency landing.

    The ski season has started earlier than planned in many of Czechia’s mountain resorts due to heavy  snow in the mountain regions. Ski lifts in many ski resorts are being put into operation this weekend and hotel owners say their first visitors are already testing the snow.  In the Giant Mountains, the popular ski resort Černá hora - Pec opened to skiers on Friday, Špindleruv Mlyn and Malá Úpa will put their lifts in operation on Saturday. The conditions for skiing are ideal with 30 to 80 centimetres of natural and technical snow on the slopes.

    Heavy snowfall is causing problems around Czechia. Many smaller roads are impassable and a heightened number of accidents are complicating traffic along the country’s main highways. A state of emergency is in place in the South Bohemia region which had 75 centimeters of fresh snow overnight. Power outages have left thousands of people without heating.

    The Vysočina region also reports severe complications and drivers have been advised not to set out for the mountain regions if possible. Although road maintenance workers are out in force, the situation is complicated by fresh snow which should continue falling throughout the day. Between 30 and 40 centimeters of fresh snow are expected to fall in southern Bohemia and Moravia, Prague should see between 15 and 30 centimeters of fresh snow on Saturday.

    The opposition ANO party would now win general elections by a landslide getting 35 percent of the votes, according to the results of a poll conducted by the Median agency. The ruling Civic Democratic Party  would come second with 13.5 percent and the opposition Freedom and Direct Democracy Party would finish third with 10.5 percent. The Pirate Party, a member of the ruling coalition, would gain 9 percent of the vote and the Mayors and Independents and TOP 09 would also cross the 5 percent threshold needed to win seats in the lower house, both with 6 percent of the votes.

    The Prague Castle Administration will launch a competition for new leases of houses in Prague’s renowned Golden Lane. It wants to revive traditional crafts in the picturesque houses lining the historic street. There are sixteen small houses in the Golden Lane, each with a different-coloured facade, the smallest with a floor area of just fourteen square meters. Over the centuries, the lane has undergone a number of reconstructions. The houses were inhabited until the Second World War. The one-time dwellings for the castle’s grooms and servants have become a major tourist attraction.
