Bavarian Premier Markus Söder (CSU) has described the first-ever Sudeten German congress held in Czechia as a historic moment, calling it a day of hope, reconciliation and joy. Speaking in Brno, where the annual gathering is taking place for the first time, Söder highlighted the symbolic significance of the event in Czech-German relations. Sudeten German association leader Bernd Posselt said participants had come with a message of love rather than hatred. Bavaria has long acted as the political patron of Sudeten Germans, many of whom settled there after their post-war expulsion from Czechoslovakia.

The most common malware threat targeting Windows computers in Czechia in April was CloudEyE, a malicious program used to download other harmful software, according to cybersecurity company ESET. It accounted for more than one in five detected Windows alware cases, despite its activity dropping from the previous month. The program typically spreads through phishing emails disguised as official documents, often in convincing Czech. Security experts warn that such tools are increasingly easy to obtain on cybercriminal marketplaces, allowing even less experienced attackers to launch data-stealing campaigns aimed at passwords and other sensitive information.

Saharan dust is expected to drift over Czechia again on Sunday, potentially taking the edge off temperatures forecast to approach 30 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists say the dust will remain high in the atmosphere, mainly around two kilometres above ground, and is unlikely to affect air quality at street level. The fine dust, carried north from storms over the Sahara, has reached Czechia several times already this year. Forecasters say its presence, along with high cloud cover, could slightly reduce afternoon temperatures compared with current model predictions.

Housing costs in Czechia have risen far faster than wages over the past 15 years, making home ownership less affordable, according to a new analysis based on Eurostat data. Property prices rose by 158 percent between 2010 and 2025, compared with a 106 percent increase in average wages. That rise in housing costs is nearly three times the EU average. Rents also climbed sharply, up 69 percent over the same period. Analysts point to limited housing supply, strong demand, demographic pessures and investor interest as key drivers behind the long-term affordability crisis.

The annual Sudeten German congress continues in Brno on Sunday, with Bavarian Premier Markus Söder (CSU) set to address the main gathering before meeting Czech President Petr Pavel in Prague later in the day. The event, being held in Czechia for the first time, has drawn both supporters and protesters. Former Czech dissident and writer Milan Uhde is to receive a top Sudeten German award. The gathering has included commemorative events linked to wartime suffering, including a reconciliation march recalling the 1945 expulsion of Brno’s German-speaking population.

Czechia has recorded its first tropical day of 2026, with temperatures reaching 30.1 degrees Celsius at the weather station in Doksany, north of Prague. Meteorologists said temperatures could still rise slightly further before the day ends. Last year’s first tropical day came earlier, in early May, while in 2024 it arrived as early as 7 April. Forecasters noted that Doksany is a somewhat unusual measurement site, known for temperature fluctuations linked to local conditions, but other parts of the country, including the Plzeň region, also saw temperatures approaching 30 degrees.

Czech government envoy for NATO commitments Jakub Landovský says it would be politically difficult for Czechia to face its allies as the only NATO member proposing defence spending below 2 percent of GDP this year. Speaking on TV Nova, he said Prague must avoid being seen as a free rider at a time when alliance unity is under pressure. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) has already indicated Czechia may miss the target again this year, despite NATO’s long-standing benchmark. Landovský also dismissed speculation that he could replace Defence Minister Jaromír Zůna (SPD).

Czech President Petr Pavel says NATO should respond more forcefully to repeated Russian provocations near alliance territory, warning that Moscow may push further if it meets no serious resistance. In an interview with The Guardian, the former NATO general said the alliance should “show its teeth” and consider both military and non-military responses, including shooting down aircraft that violate allied airspace or imposing asymmetric measures such as cyber or financial pressure. Pavel also urged stronger Western resolve in supporting Ukraine, arguing that Russia responds to strength rather than diplomacy alone.
