    President Miloš Zeman met with opposition leader and presidential candidate Andrej Babiš at Lány Chateau on Sunday. The Office of the President released photos from the meeting, but no information was disclosed regarding its agenda. The two politicians last met in late October and the same day Babiš announced he would run for president. The former prime minister later told journalists that Zeman was happy that he had decided to run for the post of head of state.

    The opposition ANO party would presently win general elections with a strong lead of 30.8 percent of the votes, according to the outcome of a December poll conducted by the STEM agency. The ruling Civic Democrats would come second with 13.9 percent of the vote,the Freedom and Direct Democracy Party would come third with 12.4 percent and the Pirate Party would be in fourth place with 9.4 percent.  The Christian Democrats and TOP 09, which are in the ruling coalition, would not pass the 5 percent threshold needed to win seats in the lower house.

    Year-on-year inflation appears to have accelerated by several tenths of a percentage point in November, from 15.1 percent in October, according to analysts cited by the ctk news agency. They point out that, as in October, the reported inflation figure will be "reduced" by about two percentage points by the impact of the energy saving tariff. Inflation could thus accelerate once again in January when it will no longer be in force. The Czech Statics Office should publish the November inflation data on Monday.

    The Christmas tree at the entrance to the European Parliament building in Brussels was felled in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands and is decorated with blown glass ornaments made in the Koulier glassworks in the Chrudim region. The Art Nouveau ornaments were made especially for this occasion. Czechia is currently the country which holds the rotating EU presidency, but the organizers said they did not want to present only Czechia’s national colours in Brussels, and opted to accentuate something pan-European. The Art Nouveau period was selected since it is associated with a time of peace and prosperity for the Continent.

    Trains in Czechia will start running according to a new timetable from Sunday, the ctk news agency reported. Apart from a change in departure times of most connections, the most significant novelty will be the acceleration of trains on some routes, for example from Prague to České Budějovice or Ostrava. Rail carriers have also launched several new connections and are increasing the price of tickets, with Czech Railways increasing prices by 15 percent.

    Public interest in the situation in Ukraine is declining and the number of Czechs who support the government’s policy in aid of Ukraine is also falling, according to the outcome of a poll conducted by the CVVM agency. According to the survey support for the government’s policy regarding Ukraine has dropped by 16 percentage points since the spring, while disapproval of its actions has increased by 17 percentage points. Forty-two percent of Czechs still agree with the government's actions in support of Ukraine, while 52% now disagree with them. According to CVVM, the decline in interest was to have been expected.

    Over 200 people gathered on Plzen’s main square on Saturday to protest against the planned demolition of the army airport in Líny near Plzen, after the government offered the site to Volkswagen as a potential location for an electric car battery plant. This is the latest in a series of protests against the airport’s demolition.

    The Volkswagen Group announced this week it was postponing its decision on the placement of a factory for electric car batteries in Eastern Europe by several months. Volkswagen was originally expected to announce its decision on where it would build the factory on Friday, December 16.  Czechia is among the locations being considered for the plant which should start producing batteries in 2027.

    Entrepreneurs will no longer have to pay royalties for music playing on the radio as a soundtrack in their shop or restaurant. President Miloš Zeman has signed an amendment to the Copyright Act, which will bring about the change, despite objections from copyright administrators and producers in the audiovisual industry. Reproduced music in a store, restaurant or hairdressers salon, which is non-profit-making and independent of the recipient's wishes, will not be subject to royalties.
