    Prime Minister Petr Fiala has asked President Miloš Zeman to name Petr Hladík minister of the environment. Mr. Hladík’s appointment was postponed over his involvement in a corruption scandal in Brno, where he is deputy mayor, but the Christian Democrats of the ruling coalition have increasingly been pushing for the appointment to take place, arguing that he was not among the accused and had explained his role in the affair adequately. Party leader and Deputy Prime Minister Marin Jurečka has held the portfolio since the previous environment minster stepped down for health reasons.

    Temperatures on the last day of the year and on New Year's Day will climb to 15 degrees Celsius, according to the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute. It will be slightly colder in Moravia and Silesia, with maximum temperatures not expected to exceed 11 degrees Celsius over the coming weekend. A slight drop in temperatures is expected in the first week of January, but temperatures should remain above average for the next three weeks.

    Czech researchers from the Academy of Sciences are advising people against excessive use of fireworks on New Year’s Eve, which they say cause extreme air pollution in the larger cities and present a serious health hazard. Maximum concentrations of dust particles measured shortly after midnight on New Year's Eve are usually the highest registered in the entire year and experts say they can result in acute smog poisoning and can even cause long-term harm, such as increasing people’s risk of developing cancer in later years. They point out that firework smog differs from ordinary smog in that it contains metallic elements such as strontium, barium or rubidium which are highly toxic.

    Health Minister Vlastimil Válek wants to introduce supplementary health insurance for above-standard care and is planning to put forward a proposal early next year. The minister said the scope of the above standard care must not include anything that is currently covered by public health insurance and it must not worsen the quality or accessibility of healthcare. As an example he mentioned more thorough  preventive check-ups, which some companies are already covering for their managers, telemedicine or social health care, i.e. care for elderly patients in inpatient social care facilities.

    Paxlovid and Lagevrio, antiviral drugs which are used to treat Covid, will be available in all Czech pharmacies starting in January, the Ministry of Health announced on its web page. The drugs will be covered by health insurance, and will be available on electronic prescription. So far they have been in short supply and only in hospital pharmacies.Paxlovide and Lagevrio are antiviral drugs developed against Covid-19 in tablet form, mainly for home treatment. According to the ministry, their administration is intended to prevent the development of a severe form of the disease and the need for hospitalization.

    In the final days of its EU Presidency, Czechia has initiated a meeting of the European Health Security Committee on the rapid spread of Covid-19 in China. China has abandoned its zero-Covid policy, opened its borders and is allowing its nationals to travel freely, which has raised concern in some European states. Italy introduced compulsory PCR tests on Wednesday following testing of passengers on a flight from China at Milan airport, where half of the passengers were found to be infected. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday that tests should be compulsory for Chinese nationals across the EU.

    The drug shortage on the market has led some people to sell and buy drugs on the Internet, according to the news site Novinky.cz. Flu medicine and antibiotics, which have been in short supply, are being sold on online bazaars and on social networks, and people are also offering or trading  sleeping pills and antidepressants. The State Institute for Drug Control has  warned that the sale of medicines outside of official distribution is illegal. The Health Ministry has set up a special team to monitor the availability of drugs and prevent fall outs in the future. Pharmacies have been ordered to stock up on basic medicines and people have been asked not to hoard drugs.

    Robert B. Pynsent, a professor of Czech and Slovak Literature at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at the University of London, has died at the age of 79. His death was announced on Twitter by his close colleague, translator Julia Sherwood on Wednesday. Czech academics have expressed deep regret over his passing, describing him as one of the world’s leading experts on Czech literature, an inspiring personality and a great promoter of the country’s literary works and culture.
