    Gas stocks in Czechia have risen by 42 million cubic meters since Friday thanks to the mild weather. Industry and Trade Minister Jozef Síkela wrote on Twitter that there are now 2.917 billion cubic metres of gas in storage, with tanks filled to 84 percent of their capacity. The public has also responded to appeals for people to reduce gas consumption in view of supply problems related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. as a result, gas consumption is 20 percent lower than it was in the last heating season.

    Police will be out in force to monitor adherence to the ban on fireworks in the historic centre and other parts of Prague on new Year's Eve. Violation of the ban, introduced in 2020, is punishable by a fine of CZK 10 000 on the spot and up to ten times that amount in administrative proceedings. According to the decree fireworks are banned in the historic city centre, around Prague’s islands, nature reserves and areas less than a quarter of a kilometre from health facilities, homes for the elderly, the zoo and animal shelters. The map of areas where fireworks are banned can be found on the web site praha.eu.

    Municipalities in Czechia began issuing voter cards on Thursday to those who want to vote outside their home constituency in January's presidential elections. The card entitles you to vote in any of the roughly 15,000 polling stations in the Czech Republic and abroad. Czechs living abroad will also be able to get a card from the Czech embassy in their country of residence. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 14,370 people have registered for the presidential elections at embassies this year.

    Thursday is also the deadline for municipalities to announce the addresses of polling stations where people can vote, although these usually do not change.

    Fuel prices in Czechia have continued to fall, with petrol now at its cheapest in 11 months. The average price of a litre of Natural 95 petrol is now CZK 36.14 per litre. The average price of diesel has also fallen to CZK 37.69 per litre, the lowest it has been since the end of February.

    During the past year, fuel prices in the Czech Republic rose to historic highs, partly influenced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Petrol was at its most expensive at the end of July and beginning of August, when the average price was close to CZK 48 per litre. The price of diesel was at its highest in mid-March, when a litre cost almost CZK 49.60 on average.

    Sněžka, Czechia's highest peak, was hit by hurricane force winds on Wednesday, the Czech News Agency reports. The wind on Sněžka reached a speed of over 136 kilometers per hour in the morning, according to data from the Anežka measuring station at the top of the mountain.

    The upper section of the mountain's cable car route had to suspend operations, as it can only run in wind speeds of up to 60 km/h.

    The expenditures of the Czech EU presidency amounted to roughly CZK 2.3 billion this year, the director of the EU presidency department, Alice Krutilová, told the Czech News Agency on Wednesday.

    14 high-level events took place in Prague during the presidency while over 300 smaller events were held around the country, of which 273 were in Prague. Over 1,600 official meetings took place in Brussels.

    Czechia has been chairing the EU Council since July. Sweden will take over from January.

    Czechia is headed for a recession, according to a survey by the consulting company PwC in which 90 percent of CEOs of large and medium-sized domestic companies expressed this opinion. A large number of them anticipate a decline in the economy as early as the first half of 2023. Only nine percent of directors believe that the country will avoid recession in the next two years. For 40 percent, this year was the most difficult year in recent times.

    Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency Věra Jourová has proposed a media law to unify media regulations across the EU. The proposal aims to prevent politicians from influencing the media and make funding more transparent. In an interview with iRozhlas.cz, Ms. Jourová said that in some member states, it had got to the point where public media was no longer fulfilling its function.

    The Czech national ice hockey team defeated the Austrian team 9:0 in their second match in group A  of the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship held in Canada. The Czechs took their second win of the tournament and collected six points. On Monday the team stunned defending champions Canada with a 5:2 victory. Their next game is on Thursday against Sweden.
