    Thousands of skiers descended on Czech mountain resorts this weekend as conditions improved after heavy snowfall in recent days. There is up to 50 centimetres of snow on the slopes of the Giant Mountains in the Hradec Králové region and many resorts have started making artificial snow as well.

    The ski resorts of Pec pod Sněžkou welcomed over 9,000 visitors this weekend, while Špindlerův mlýn had more than 7,000 people. Some resorts are still only partially open with ski lifts operating only at the weekend.

    Ladislav Vrabel, a man behind the group “Czechia first” that has organised a series of anti-government protests in Prague, has been detained by police in Prague on charges of spreading false information online, the news website iDnes reported.

    The charge relates to a video posted by Mr Vrabel in November last year, in which he stated that the Czech government wanted to attack Russia with nuclear weapons.

    Police did not reveal Mr Vrabel’s name, but stated that a man born in the same year was detained following an anti-government protest in Prague on Saturday attended by several hundred people.

    Former Czech Army officer and NATO official Petr Pavel would defeat ANO leader and former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš in the second round of the presidential election next weekend with 57.7 percent of the vote, according to the latest poll by STEM agency for CNN Prima News published on Sunday. Mr Babiš would receive 42.4 percent. According to STEM, the turnout would be 68 percent.

    A poll by Data Collect and Kantar CZ for Czech Television published on Saturday also favours Mr Pavel. According to that poll, 46 percent of people would definitely vote for Mr Pavel, while seven percent would rather vote for him than for his opponent. Some 29 percent of voters would definitely vote for Mr Babiš and nine percent would rather vote for him.

    A mass for the homeland was celebrated in St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle on Sunday by Prague Archbishop Jan Graubner.

    The service was attended by outgoing President Miloš Zeman and both of his potential successors, retired army general Petr Pavel and the chairman of the ANO movement and former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. Among the participants was also the unsuccessful presidential candidate and Senator Pavel Fischer.

    The mass took place less than a week before the second round of the presidential election.

    Czechia’s men’s number one Jiří Lehečka advanced to fifth round of tennis’s Australian Open in Melbourne. The World No. 71 defeated the sixth-seeded Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 ,7-6, reaching his first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal. He will next face the winner of a match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner.

    In women’s singles, Barbora Krejčíková lost her fourth round match, after failing to get past American Jessica Pegula, who won 7-5, 6-2.

    The main prize in this year’s Trilobit film and television awards has gone to Tomáš Bojar for his documentary film about Czech airmen in World War II, combining never-before-seen archive footage with the memories of RAF pilots František Fajtl and Filip Janský.

    The same prize also went to Five Years, a Czech TV series centred on events at a prom night that later lead to rape allegations, told from the perspective of the two main characters.

    The Vladislav Vančura award for lifelong contribution to Czech cinematography went to the legendary Czech painter, costume and set designer Theodor Pištěk, who won an Oscar in 1985 for his costumes for Amadeus.

    The Trilobit awards are handed out by the Czech Film and Television Union FITES.

    Hundreds of people gathered in the centre of Prague on Saturday afternoon to demonstrate against the current government. The participants started their protest on Wenceslas Square, then marched to the seat of the government.

    Speakers demanded the resignation of the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala and advised the participants not to vote for Petr Pavel in the second round of elections to the presidency.

    The event was organised by the group “Czechia First”, which was behind a protest in Prague last September that was attended by about 70 000 people.

    The wife of presidential candidate and ANO party leader Andrej Babiš has received an envelope with a bullet and an anonymous note full of insults, Mr. Babiš announced at a press conference on Saturday.

    Mr Babiš said he had contacted the police, who started to investigate the matter. He also said he considered it a threat to his family, which is afraid for its life.

    Mr Babiš called on the chairmen of the ruling coalition parties and his rival in the second round, Petr Pavel, whom he repeatedly described as the coalition’s candidate, to urge their supporters not to attack voters of parties with different views.
