SPOLU is expected to hold five councilor seats in the new City Hall administration, of which three will be occupied by Civic Democrats and two by TOP 09 party members. The Pirate Party will hold four councilor seats and the Mayors and Independents two.

If the Czech crown remains as strong as it currently is against the euro, exporters could lose around CZK 210 billion in revenue when compared to last year, the deputy chairman of the Czech Exporters Association (Asociace exportérů), Otto Daněk, told the Czech News Agency on Friday. He added that this would also mean hitting red numbers for many of the concerned parties.

On Thursday when trading closed, the Czech crown was valued at a rate of 23.69 CZK/EUR, the best exchange rate since July 2008. Czech exports exceeded CZK 4.47 trillion last year.

Consumption of antibiotics has grown by 47 percent year-on-year and the rise in usage has had an effect on the availability of this medication over the past several weeks, Health Minister Vlastimil Válek said on Friday. However, he said that consumption rates are now declining, with Deputy Minister Jakub Dvořáček adding that the situation should stabilise around the end of February. The rise in year-on-year consumption was explained by the low infection rates in early 2022, when Covid measures were still in place.

Opposition parties have called on the minister to take personal responsibility for the shortage. He defended himself on Friday by saying that the issue is also present in other countries and cannot be solved on the national level. He named the limitation of packaging production in China and the war in Ukraine where much of the medication was produced as reasons.

The Health Ministry says it plans to find a long-term solution to the issue by a change in legislation which should become active this year.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Czech Olympic Committee and the National Sports Agency have all agreed that Czechia will not boycott next year’s Summer Olympic Games in Paris if Russian and Belurusian athletes end up taking part in the event, the Czech News Agency reported on Friday.

However, if Russia’s aggression against Ukraine continues, Russian and Belarusian athletes should not be able to take part in next year’s Olympic Games, the Chairman of Czechia’s National Sports Agency Ondřej Šebek told Czech Radio. The statement was made in an interview ahead of an online meeting of EU sports ministers on Friday, where Mr. Šebek is representing Czechia.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has not yet ruled out the possibility that Russian and Belarusian athletes could take part in the Olympics. Mr. Šebek said that this has caused surprise as it was the IOC that was one of the first to call for the non-participation of Russian athletes.

January saw year-on-year consumer prices rise by 17.5 percent, according to data published by the Czech Statistics Agency on Friday. In December, the figure lay at 15.8 percent. The rise is being explained by the end of the government savings tariff subsidies for energy, which ran until the end of last year and had a positive effect on energy rates for households. Heating, water and food costs have also risen.

The Czech National Bank, as well as analysts quoted by Czech Television, think that inflation peaked in January and is likely to begin falling in the coming months, going below 10 percent in the second half of 2023.
