It is in Czechia’s interest that the EU chooses a more cautious approach towards China and deepens its relations with the United States, the country‘s foreign minister, Jan Lipavský, has said in an interview with the Czech News Agency published on Friday. He added that European states need to be better prepared for the fact that Beijing may exert pressure on them through their current dependencies on China.

He also warned that a switch in the EU’s decision making mechanism towards majority voting would give an advantage to Germany and France, countries that are currently pursuing a more benevolent policy towards Beijing. The United States, on the other hand, have been keen to limit technological ties with China.

Czechia’s struggling state-owned postal company Czech Post, recorded a loss of CZK 1.725 billion in 2022, following up on more than a billion crowns in losses the year before, according to the company’s own Friday press release. The company is expected to announce a large-scale restructuring plan by the end of the first half of this year. This is expected to include the closing down of many of its branches as well as further downsizing. It these changes are not implemented, the company expects its losses would reach CZK 4 billion in 2023 and lead to its bankruptcy.
