Prague deputy mayor for culture Jiří Pospíšil has recommended that the venue the Municipal House not go ahead with a concert by Russian opera singer Anna Netrebko planned for October. The city’s authorities had earlier said they were considering barring the event and Mr. Pospíšil said the matter would be further discussed with the organisers and within Prague’s government.

The official made the comment after talks on Friday with representatives of the embassy of Ukraine, which put Netrebko on its sanctions list after Russia entered the country. The singer previously supported pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine but condemned Russia’s full invasion last year. Critics say she is close to Vladimir Putin.

Tennis player Barbora Krejčíková still hasn't recovered from the ankle injury she sustained during Wimbledon and has had to withdraw from the upcoming WTA tournament in Prague, the organisers announced on Friday at a press conference. The current world No. 12 and Czech No. 3 has not played tennis since the beginning of July, when she had to withdraw from her Wimbledon second round match against the Russian Mirra Andrejeva due to her injury.

If she had played, Krejčíková would have been the highest seeded Czech player in the Prague Open. Marie Bouzková has now become the top-seeded Czech participant in the tournament.

The Prague Municipal Court has rejected the case brought by the organisation Kverulant, which sought to determine that the courtyard of Prague Castle is a public space. The organisation has been striving for unlimited access to the Castle grounds since the former President Miloš Zeman was in office. Gatherings of people in the courtyard will therefore continue to be subject to permission from the Prague Castle Administration.

The foreign police at Prague airport did not allow a Russian tennis player into the country when she tried to enter on Thursday evening for the city's upcoming WTA tournament, the Czech News Agency reports. The tournament's organisers did not disclose the player's name but three Russians were due to participate in the singles qualifiers: Diana Shnaider, Polina Kudermetova and Erika Andreeva.

The organisers told journalists on Friday that all other Russian and Belarusian participants have been informed that due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there is a ban on their athletes participating in sports competitions in the country and have advised them not to travel to the Prague Open. Tournament director Miroslav Malý said they do not expect any player with Russian or Belarusian citizenship to participate in the tournament given the circumstances.

Retired Czech ice hockey star Dominik Hašek says that Russian and Belarusian tennis players should not be allowed to appear at a Prague WTA tournament next week even under a neutral flag. Speaking on Czech Television on Thursday night, Hašek said that such players were citizens of those states, represented them and served as an advertisement for them.

Under government regulations, sports people from Russia and Belarus may not represent their countries on Czech soil.

Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina and Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus are registered to play in the Prague Open, which begins at the city’s Stromovka park on Monday.

The Czech police said on Thursday they would ensure government regulations were upheld in connection with the tournament.
