    A man from Kraslice in West Bohemia has been found guilty of publicly approving of a terrorist attack on mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch. Jiří Kantor got a suspended sentence for supporting and promoting terrorism. The maximum possible term for such a crime is 15 years.

    After a terrorist killed 51 people in two mass shootings in Christchurch Kantor shared a news story about it on Facebook and added the comment “job well done”. The court heard that the 31-year-old also shared a video of the atrocity with friends online.

    Former investigative journalist Ivan Safronov, who was arrested by Russian counterintelligence agents on Tuesday, stands accused of passing classified information to Czech intelligence, according to his lawyer Jevgenij Smirnov.

    According to the prosecution Safronov transmitted secret information about Russia’s military cooperation with Middle East and African countries to the Czech Republic’s intelligence services which were acting in coordination with the CIA.

    Safronov himself maintains that the case against him is linked to his journalistic activities and denies any guilt. Ivan Safronov was arrested on Tuesday morning by agents from the FSB, the successor agency of the KGB. He could face up to 20 years in prison.

    Police are investigating one of the drivers involved in Tuesday’s fatal train collision near the Czech-German border on suspicion of public endangerment through negligence.

    Two people were killed and 24 injured in the head-on collision of two passenger trains, one of which was travelling from Karlovy Vary to Johanngeorgenstadt in Germany, the other going in the opposite direction.

    The accident happened near Pernink, about 10 kilometres from the border with Germany, in hilly wooded terrain that complicated the rescue effort.

    Of those injured, nine had serious or severe injuries and were airlifted to nearby hospitals. A German citizen is reported to be among those hurt.

    At least two people are reported to have died and more than two dozen were injured in a head-on train collision in the Karlovy Vary region near the Czech-German border on Tuesday afternoon.

    The trains, one of which was travelling from Karlovy Vary to Johanngeorgenstadt in Germany, the other in the opposite direction,  collided in wooded, uneven  terrain near the town of Pernink, which made rescue work difficult, the ctk news agency reports. Both Czech and German rescue crews were at the scene.

    The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals and given first aid at the scene of the accident.

    Both train drivers are reported to have been injured. One of them was detained by the police.

    Preliminary reports suggest human error may have been to blame.

    A homeless man who stole five bread-rolls in a shop during the coronavirus crisis has been sentenced to a year and a half in prison, the news site novinky.cz reported. The man received an extraordinarily tough sentence because he stole goods during a state of emergency and was serving a suspended sentence for theft at the time of the incident. Originally the Municipal Court in Brno sentenced him to two years in jail. The verdict of the regional court is legally binding.

    The number of newly registered COVID  19 cases in the Czech Republic reached 51 on Monday, which is the lowest figure in two weeks, the ctk news agency reported, citing data released by the Ministry of Health.  Altogether 12,566 cases of COVID infection have been detected since testing begun in March, over 7,800 people have fully recovered from the disease, 350 people have died. Currently 4,343 people are fighting the disease, of which 132 are hospitalized and 14 are in serious condition.

    The Czech economy is expected to drop by 7.8 percent this year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which is significantly more than originally expected. In its latest macroeconomic estimate, the European Commission worsened this year's outlook for the Czech economy by 1.6 percentage points as compared to its May forecast. In 2021 the Czech Republic's gross domestic product should increase by 4.5 percent, but even that is half a point less than the Commission predicted in its spring estimate.

    According to the Commission, the decline in the Czech export-oriented economy will be significantly affected by the slowdown in industrial production as well as lower demand in other European countries. The stagnation of the car industry will have a particularly significant impact, Brussels predicts. . The EU economy is expected to fall by a record 8.3 percent this year.

    The three-day-long weekend was the most tragic on Czech roads since the start of the year, with the traffic police reporting 15 deaths.

    Six people were killed in traffic accidents on Friday evening alone, when thousands of people left the big cities and headed for their summer houses for the long weekend.

    Twenty people who were injured in accidents at the weekend are in serious condition, the ctk news agency reported.

    Czech cultural figures have been paying tribute to Ennio Morricone, one of the greatest movie composers of all time, who died on Sunday at the age of 91.

    The Italian composer worked closely with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, with whom he recorded the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's film "The Hateful Eight" for which he won an Oscar, and BAFTA and Golden Globe awards.

    “Our cooperation with Ennio Morricone was crucial, unforgettable and unique, we will remember him with the greatest respect,” the orchestra wrote on Facebook.

    Ennio Moricone last conducted in Prague in January 2019, shortly after his 90th birthday.
