The daily increase in coronavirus cases exceeded 500 on Friday, a daily record, Ministry of Health data show. The rise in reported cases stems from increased testing, not an outbreak or uptick, the ministry said.
On eight occasions since early March, and four times in August, the daily tally of new Covid-19 patients has exceeded 300. About 5,000 people in the Czech Republic currently have the disease.
Immunologist Roman Prymula told Czech Radio on Saturday clusters are widespread but not particularly big. He said people returning from holidays abroad account for a fair percentage of new infections in past weeks.
To date 411 people have died with the disease while about three-quarters have recovered from the virus.

The Council of Prague City Hall is set to vote at the end of August on a complete ban on slot machines in the Czech capital. If the proposal passes, it could be put to the vote in the city’s assemply on September 10. The reason for the possible complete ban is that the Office for the Protection of Competition has refused the City Hall proposal to make an exemption to the ban in some municipal districts, Councillor Hana Marvanová told the Czech News Agency on Friday.
The anti-trust authority defended its decision on the basis that exempting certain parts of the city from the ban would be an unfair intervention into fair market competition. Ms. Marvanová said that seven to eight districts, including the tourist hub of Prague 1, had originally been exempted from the ban by City Hall. Now the proposed ban will have to include all districts of the Czech capital.

The Ministry of Health is expected to update its online list of “safe” states for travel during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Preliminary data suggests that only Romania and Spain (except the Canary Islands) will be considered countries where travelers face risk of contracting COVID-19. Czechs returning from these countries would therefore have to undergo a coronavirus test after returning from these states, or undertake 10 day quarantine. Currently, only Romania is the only EU state considered to be a travel risk, but the ministry has announced that Spain will be put on the risk list from August 24.
The Czech Republic itself is considered a risky travel destination by EU members Finland, Estonia and Slovenia.
