Firefighters are responding to a forest fire near Břeclav, where an explosion at a munitions factory Muna once scattered thousands of pieces of ammunition into the surrounding area. Pyrotechnicians are still removing it to this day. The fire is under control. Spokesperson Jaroslav Mikoška said that no ammunition had been reported. Firefighters declared the second level of the four possible levels of fire alert at the scene, meaning that multiple units are responding. There have been no injuries in the fire.
The Soviet army decided to destroy the Muna factory during the liberation, blowing it up. The explosion scattered ammunition across 750 hectares. In the 1990s, the state had 250 hectares cleared. Since 2015, pyrotechnicians have been searching the remaining area. They have recovered tens of thousands of pieces of small-caliber ammunition, artillery and hand grenades, machine-gun rounds, and detonators from the ground.

Justice Minister Jeroným Tejc (ANO) has confirmed that the United States has asked the Czech Republic to extradite four detained Mexican nationals who are being prosecuted in connection with drug and terrorism-related crimes. According to the minister, two of them agreed to be extradited, and their extradition took place last week. The other two remain in custody in the Czech Republic, while a prosecutor is now reviewing the US extradition request and the supporting documents. The minister added that the extradition process usually takes several months.
The detention of the four Mexicans in the Czech Republic in June was reported today by AFP. According to the agency, they are members of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel, and the US authorities accuse them of attempting to purchase submachine guns, grenade launchers, and mortars in the Czech Republic in exchange for drugs such as fentanyl or methamphetamine. They face the possibility of life imprisonment.

The number of self-employed people in the Czech Republic who earn their income through independent economic activity rose by 23,000 to 1.202 million in the first half of this year. Last year, the number of self-employed people, including private doctors, artists, and farmers, increased by 25,000. According to the administration’s data, the largest number of self-employed people is registered in Prague, with 229,000.
Although the number of self-employed people is at a record high, representatives of the business community and some experts have previously said that the current increase does not actually reflect greater entrepreneurial activity. To a large extent, they say, it is a result of the so-called false self-employment, in which people work as freelancers under a trade licence even though they could instead be employed by the company they work for.

Czechia will witness a rare celestial spectacle on Wednesday, August 12, when the Moon will cover more than 86 percent of the Sun's disc in some parts of the country.
The eclipse will be visible as a total eclipse from Greenland, Iceland and parts of Spain. According to the Czech Astronomical Society, the event will begin in Central Europe at around 7:19 p.m. CEST, with the maximum phase in Czechia occurring at around 8:11 p.m. The exact timing will vary slightly depending on location.
In Prague, the eclipse will begin at 7:19 p.m., reach its maximum at around 8:12 p.m., and the Sun will set at 8:27 p.m.
The eclipse will be followed overnight by the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Observers could see between 50 and 80 meteors per hour.
Observatories across Czechia are preparing public viewing events for both phenomena.

The Regional Court in Hradec Králové has rehabilitated Václav Trtík, a parishioner in Číhošť and an eyewitness to the so-called Číhošť miracle in December 1949. Trtík was imprisoned in 1950 in connection with the persecution of priest Josef Toufar, who was tortured and killed by the communist State Security service (StB). The court ruled on Tuesday that Trtík had been unlawfully detained.
Trtík, who died in 2007, was rehabilitated at the request of his daughter, Marie Vavřičková. Toufar was judicially rehabilitated in October 2024.
Priest Josef Toufar is one of the best-known victims of the communist campaign against the Catholic Church after the communist takeover of Czechoslovakia in February 1948. He came under investigation by the StB after a cross on the main altar of his church in Číhošť, in the Havlíčkův Brod region, allegedly moved during mass in December 1949.

People can take part in a public stress test of the eDoklady digital ID app on Thursday at 1 p.m. The Interior Ministry and the Digital and Information Agency (DIA) want to gather data under conditions that most closely simulate the simultaneous load the system could face during elections, their representatives said at a press conference on Tuesday.
The test is being held ahead of this autumn’s municipal elections. Last year, the eDoklady system collapsed under heavy demand during the parliamentary elections.
