The Czech government will spend three billion crowns this year and four next year on measures to fight drought, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) said in a social media post on Sunday. He said the funds would come from the budget of the Agriculture Ministry.
According to the prime minister the money will go to connect water management networks, retain water in the landscape, build small reservoirs and ponds, introduce irrigation measures and fund similar projects. Some of the money is also earmarked for preparations for major water projects, including land purchases, project documentation and initial groundwork for the Nové Heřminovy, Kryry and Vlachovice reservoirs.
Earlier this week the prime minister announced the decision to revive a national coalition to fight drought. Drought and its impacts is expected to dominate the agenda of Monday’s cabinet meeting.

Fish farmers across Czechia are struggling with prolonged drought and an extreme shortage of water. They are reducing or suspending supplementary feeding to lower the fish's oxygen consumption, while ponds are being aerated regularly. Several ponds have been netted early.
In the Třeboň area, which delivers tons of carp for the Czech Christmas table, part of the 200-hectare Koclířov pond has been drained and the fish moved to holding tanks.
More than a third of the water is missing from the region's famous system of fish ponds due to the drought. The water level in Lake Svět, for example, has fallen by 98 centimetres. High temperatures are also causing water to evaporate more quickly.

All Czech tourists evacuated during a major wildfire near Omiš, south of Split, have been able to return to their accommodation, Czech Consul in Split Štěpán Šantrůček said on Saturday. Around 300 Czech tourists were among more than 2,000 people evacuated from the area due to a raging wildfire, which is now under control. It was described as one of the worst in Croatia’s history. One woman died and more than 30 people were injured, while a large number of homes were destroyed.
Several Czech tourists required minor medical treatment, but none suffered serious injuries, Šantrůček said.
Jan Papež, head of the Association of Travel Agencies, advised Czechs planning to travel to Croatia to check the latest situation and follow instructions from the authorities. Those travelling with a tour operator should contact the agency, which can provide information and arrange an alternative if necessary.

A price war between supermarket chains is one of the factors helping to reduce food prices in Czechia, according to Tomáš Prouza, president of the Czech Confederation of Commerce and Tourism. He said retailers are selling some basic products, including milk, butter and eggs, below cost to attract customers who then spend money on other goods in the same store.
Prouza noted that the practice is not necessarily a bad one because, in his view, no one loses out. Consumers get cheaper food, while farmers and food producers receive the prices they have negotiated for their products.
