A new study by Czech climatologists provides the most detailed estimate yet of how dangerously high temperatures could develop in Central Europe. It suggests that the coming decades could bring a significant increase in days when extreme daytime heat coincides with tropical nights, when temperatures do not fall below 20 degrees Celsius.

Such conditions pose a major health risk. Some regions could see more than seven such days a year. At present, the combination of hot days and tropical nights is relatively rare, averaging fewer than two days a year between 1995 and 2014.

A Smartwings Boeing 737 MAX flying from Prague to Tel Aviv had to return to Václav Havel Airport in Prague overnight after a problem was detected in one of its engines. The aircraft landed safely, Smartwings spokesperson Vladimíra Dufková told Novinky.

There were 189 passengers and six crew members on board. Prague Airport declared a full emergency ahead of the landing, deploying airport firefighters and emergency crews along with Prague firefighters. Airport operations were temporarily suspended and some flights were diverted, including to Brno. A replacement aircraft was later assigned to the Tel Aviv service.

The Health Ministry is facing a number of objections to a proposal that would extend access to assisted reproduction to women without a male partner. Under current law, artificial insemination is available only to heterosexual couples, a rule the ministry wants to change.

While some ministries do not oppose the proposal, the Labour and Social Affairs and Justice ministries are among those raising objections. The Labour Ministry has submitted seven major comments, arguing, among other things, that the state should not artificially create single-parent families.

Demand for assisted reproduction has almost tripled over the past 15 years. More than 5,000 children were born through assisted reproduction last year, the highest number on record.

Nineteen-year-old Czech athlete Michal Rada became junior world champion in the 400 metres hurdles in Eugene, winning in a European junior record of 48.59 seconds. He improved on his silver medal from the previous championship in Lima.

Rada was the fastest at every split and finished 0.64 seconds ahead of Japan’s Taiju Gotō, the favourite for the title. He also improved his personal best from last year by 0.19 seconds, breaking the European junior record that had stood since 1984.

Rada’s gold was the fourth medal for the Czech team in Eugene. Pole vaulter Nicole Krutilová also won gold, while decathlete Adam Juliš took bronze and the mixed 4x400-metre relay won silver.

Professional organisations, institutions, associations and trade unions in the cultural sector have called on the Czech government to withdraw its new state cultural policy for 2026–2030. In an open letter, dozens of groups criticised the way the document was prepared, saying the process was non-transparent and excluded the public.

They are calling instead for the implementation of the State Cultural Policy 2026–2030+, which was approved by the previous government after lengthy preparation and consultation. The groups say the ministry had assured the cultural community that it would introduce that document, but failed to do so by the end of June as planned.

The new policy has been published by the Czech Chamber of Commerce and is open to comments. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said he would respond to the open letter, while Culture Minister Oto Klempíř defended the new policy last week.

Two groups of Czech tourists were rescued by helicopters in the Austrian Alps over the weekend. In one case, four Czechs got into trouble during a hike near Traunstein. In the other, a Czech family needed help on a via ferrata on the Grosser Donnerkogel mountain.

The group of four had planned their route to the Traunsee via ferrata using an app. When they realised the ferrata was too difficult for them, they decided to descend to the valley via an unmarked trail. They became lost at an altitude of 1,249 metres and called for help.

The second group, a family, took a wrong turn while descending from the summit of Grosser Donnerkogel. Their 10-year-old daughter became increasingly exhausted, and they also called for help. All the tourists were safely taken down to the valley.

The Czech Senate has again flown the historic Belarusian flag to mark the 2020 presidential election in Belarus. Senate President Miloš Vystrčil said the gesture was meant to show support for those fighting for a free and democratic Belarus.

International observers described the 2020 election as neither free nor fair. Authorities declared Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, the winner. The opposition rejected the result and mass protests broke out, but they were brutally suppressed by the regime.

The historic white-red-white flag has become a symbol of the Belarusian opposition, although it is not officially used by the current regime. The Senate first flew it in August 2020 and has done so several times since.
