Following talks at Prague Castle, King Abdullah was received by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO). Their discussions are focusing on bilateral relations, the security situation in the Middle East and opportunities for further economic and defence cooperation.

A 90-year-old driver travelled around 3.5 kilometres in the wrong direction on the D35 motorway near Olomouc on Thursday, without causing an accident. Police said the man mistakenly entered the motorway at Přáslavice and was stopped within two minutes of the first report from other motorists. He told officers he had become confused while driving from Olomouc to Velká Bystřice. A breath test was negative and he had a valid medical certificate allowing him to drive. Police fined him CZK 5,500 and gave him six penalty points. It was the second similar incident on a Czech motorway this week.

Europe is entering another energy crisis that is likely to hit Central Europe particularly hard, Czech Industry and Trade Minister Karel Havlíček (ANO) said on Friday. Speaking at an energy summit in Prague, Havlíček warned that rising wholesale gas and electricity prices would gradually reach consumers over the coming months. He said Czechia would seek allies within the EU for measures to stabilise energy prices. In particular, Prague wants to postpone the EU’s planned ETS 2 emissions trading system and limit the impact of the existing ETS 1 scheme on some industries. The government is also prepared to cap electricity prices if market prices continue to rise.

Europe needs to speed up efforts to strengthen its military capabilities despite sharply higher defence spending, according to Seán Clancy, chairman of the EU Military Committee. In an interview with the Czech News Agency, Clancy said Europe was making progress but was catching up after roughly two decades of underinvestment. Priorities include air defence, air-to-air refuelling, drones and artificial intelligence. EU member states spent a combined EUR 415 billion on defence and security last year, equivalent to 2.2 percent of GDP. Clancy said this is expected to rise to 2.4 percent this year.

The Czech Union of Judges has called on Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) to substantiate claims that some judges rule without evidence and that a “mafia” can have people jailed on demand, or refrain from making such statements. Babiš made the remarks at an election rally in Havířov while explaining his changed position on parliamentary immunity. The union said such serious, unsubstantiated accusations undermine public confidence in an independent judiciary. Babiš’s own prosecution in the Stork’s Nest subsidy case is currently suspended because the Chamber of Deputies declined to lift his parliamentary immunity.

Police are warning of a large-scale campaign of fraudulent SMS messages posing as the Czech Republic’s largest health insurer, VZP. The scam has been spreading across the country over the past two weeks.

Unlike many other smishing campaigns, the latest fraud is relatively sophisticated. The fake websites linked to the messages appear convincing and can therefore be difficult to distinguish from legitimate VZP pages.

The campaign is currently being carried out exclusively under the VZP name, but police warn that fraudsters could use the same method to impersonate other Czech institutions and organisations.

VZP has already distanced itself from the fraudulent messages.

Leaders of the governing ANO, Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) and Motorists parties have reached an agreement allowing the cabinet to approve its draft 2027 state budget on Monday. The proposed deficit of CZK 389 billion, around EUR 16 billion, will be reduced by several billion crowns. Further measures to be introduced by the end of this year could produce savings of up to CZK 20 billion, although these will not yet be reflected in the budget bill. Motorists leader Petr Macinka said the coalition had also agreed to reduce the deficit by at least CZK 60 billion in 2028.
