The European Commission has sent a letter to the Czech authorities requesting clarification on how the country is preventing a conflict of interest involving Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO), Seznamzpravy.cz reported. Brussels is also seeking assurances that Agrofert will not receive EU funding until the situation is fully resolved. According to the report, Babiš says he eliminated the conflict of interest after returning to office by placing all shares of Agrofert into the private RSVP Trust. In its letter, the Commission asks for detailed information on national measures addressing the potential conflict and wants confirmation that no additional EU subsidies have been granted to Agrofert since Babiš became prime minister again.

Czechia is the eighth most advanced economy in the European Union, according to the latest Prosperity Index compiled by analysts at Česká spořitelna and the Europe in Data portal. The ranking compares quality of life and economic performance across the bloc, with Sweden, Germany and Denmark topping the list. After slipping in the wake of post-invasion inflation in 2022 and 2023, Czechia has climbed back up the table. Analysts note that the country invests heavily, but often in machinery rather than intangible assets such as patents or software. While its economy is complex and highly robotised, experts say future prosperity will depend on shifting towards higher value-added production and innovation.

Rections to Minister Macinka's UN speeches were mixed back in Czechia. Jan Hrnčíř from SPD partner coalition governing party downplayed the significance of the address. He said the remarks were “words of Mr. Macinka” and suggested the speech had been prepared by the minister himself rather than reflecting an official government position. By contrast, Veronika Kovářová (opposition Pirate Party) welcomed the tone of the speech. She said Macinka’s call on Russia to end the war was “a step in the right direction” and added that if the foreign minister speaks at the UN, she assumes he does so on behalf of the entire cabinet.

Police investigators probing crimes committed under the communist regime identified 68 suspects last year, 12 more than in 2024. Of those, 23 were formally charged, according to the annual report of the Office for the Documentation and Investigation of the Crimes of Communism. In one case prosecution was time-barred, in two it was deemed purposeless, and in 42 cases the suspects had already died. The specialised police unit focuses on unresolved crimes from 1948 to 1989, including abuse of power, murder and crimes against humanity.
Last year the office opened 101 new cases. Among those charged were dozens of former officers and senior officials of the communist secret police, the StB. Investigators also continued examining the 1948 death of former foreign minister Jan Masaryk.

Taxi drivers in Czechia will soon have to prove at least basic knowledge of the Czech language, according to a report by Novinky.cz. The Transport Ministry says the aim is to ensure drivers can communicate with passengers and handle road situations safely. Transport Minister Ivan Bednárik (SPD) says the rules, inspired by other EU states, could take effect from January 2028. Ride-hailing platform Bolt has already introduced its own language tests and courses. Officials argue the move will improve safety and service quality amid a surge in foreign drivers, especially in Prague.

“No army can break the will of a nation that has decided to be free,” Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka told the UN Security Council on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He urged Moscow to end the war not as a sign of weakness, but of responsibility. Macinka compared today’s frontline in Ukraine to a new Berlin Wall and echoed Ronald Reagan’s 1987 call to tear it down. Addressing Russia’s UN ambassador Vasily Nebenzya and President Vladimir Putin, he said aggression rewards fear, not strength, and warned that appeasing it only delays further conflict.

Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka told the UN General Assembly that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine can never be justified, marking four years since the start of the war. Addressing his absent Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, he said missiles are not arguments and described ongoing strikes as proof of Moscow’s failure. Macinka urged Russia to define what victory means, asking how many destroyed cities and lost lives are “enough.” A true great power, he argued, shows strength by ending wars, not prolonging them. Czechia will back Ukraine’s resolution at the UN.
