    Talks on a defence agreement between the Czech Republic and the United States could begin in the second half of next month, the Czech deputy minister of defence, Jan Havránek, said in Washington. Mr. Havránek will head a negotiating team comprising officials from the ministries of defence and foreign affairs and other Czech agencies.

    The Czech minister of defence, Jana Černochová, and her US counterpart, Lloyd Austin, discussed plans for a defence cooperation agreement between the two sides in the US capital on Thursday.

    A court in Prague has found former MP Miloslav Rozner guilty of Holocaust denial over a statement he made about Lety, a World War II concentration camp for Romanies in Southern Bohemia. Mr. Rozner, who is from Tomio Okamura’s Freedom and Direct Democracy, got a suspended sentence for calling Lety a “non-existent pseudo concentration camp” in 2017.

    The one-time deputy said he had merely criticised a government decision to buy a pig farm on the site. Mr. Rozner may appeal the verdict.

    Viktoria Plzeň are now leading the Czech domestic soccer league after a 3:1 win over Slovácko on Sunday evening. Plzeň are two points ahead of Slavia Prague, who suffered a surprise 3:4 defeat to Hradec Králové in the first round of the group system that closes the season. Slavia, who are defending champions, have a chance to go back on top if they beat Plzeň in the capital next weekend.

    Some 594 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the Czech Republic on Sunday, the lowest daily tally since October 10. There were also 114 suspected reinfections.

    Sunday saw 727 people in Czech hospitals with the coronavirus. Forty-two are in a critical condition.

    The seven-day case incidence rate was at 128 per 100,000. Prague has the highest infection rate in the country, while the Liberec Region has the lowest.

    Checks on the margins on foodstuffs launched by the Czech Ministry of Agriculture and the Office for the Protection of Competition will not succeed in halting price rises, says the Association of Bakers and Confectioners. In a statement released on Monday, it said its members had seen costs of producing breads rise 75 percent year on year.

    The association said that a number of firms in the sector had either ceased or suspended their activities and that the existence of other bakeries was under threat.

    Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala congratulated French President Emmanuel Macron for his re-election on Sunday. Mr Fiala wrote on Twitter that he wishes Emmanuel Macron “all the best and further accomplishments as president”. France is a vital partner for the Czech Republic, according to Petr Fiala, and the Czech government is keen on developing the great relationship between the two countries further. He also added that the Czech EU presidency immediately follows the French one.

    Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský wished Emmanuel Macron “all the best for the next five years of service to France and Europe in meeting challenges ranging from the war in Europe to climate change.” He wrote on Twitter that Europe will come out stronger from these challenges.

    President Miloš Zeman said he hoped Mr. Macron would continue with his endeavours with regard to Russia and its president. The French leader has spoken to the Kremlin chief several times.

    A part of the rib of last Austrian Emperor and King of Bohemia Charles I. was placed in the Imperial Chapel of the Cathedral of St. Vitus at Prague Castle on Sunday, the Czech News Agency reported on Sunday evening. The ceremony was attended by the grandson of Charles I., Charles of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine.

    The event took place on the 100 year anniversary of the death of Charles I, who became emperor in 1916 after the death of his predecessor Franz Joseph.

    Charles I. was declared blessed by Pope John Paul II. At least some of his remains were thereafter transformed into relics in Rome.

    EU Commissioner Věra Jourová told Czech Television on Sunday that she expects the European Union will pass a sixth package of sanctions on Russia next week.

    Aside from sanctions on the main Russian bank Sberbank, member states are also considering an embargo on energy imports. However, she says that some states who are dependent on Russian oil have reservations. The EU will also sanction more individuals and companies associated with the Kremlin regime, she said.
