• Museum dedicated to Alice Masaryk opens in Lány

    A new museum has been opened in Lány near Prague dedicated to Alice Masaryk, daughter of first Czechoslovak president T.G. Masaryk, and the Czech Red Cross, which she headed. It is in a building where Alice Masaryk lived and is near the presidential retreat in Lány.

    The museum contains some of Alice Masaryk’s original furniture and equipment from an advice centre for mothers with children that operated at her home for over 60 years.

    The institution is run by the T.G. Masaryk Museum in nearby Rakovník.

  • Hana Moučková re-elected leader of Sokol

    Hana Moučková has been re-elected head of the Czech Sokol Community and will lead the traditional gymnastics and sports organisation for another three years. It will be her fifth term at the helm.

    Ms. Moučková won re-election at the 13th congress of Sokol at the organisation’s Tyrš House Headquarters in Prague.

    Sokol was founded in 1862 and played an important role in the development of nationalism at the time of the Czech National Revival.

  • Kvitová wins Eastbourne for first title in over year

    The Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitová has won the tennis tournament in the UK’s Eastbourne for her first title in 15 months. The 32-year-old beat Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 6-2 in Saturday’s final of a competition that directly proceeds the Wimbledon tournament.

    It was the 29th career trophy for Kvitova, who won Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014, her only Grand Slam titles.

  • Striker Kuchta joins Sparta after only six months in Russia

    Czech international Jan Kuchta has joined Sparta Prague football club from Locomotive Moscow. The 25-year-old striker has signed a one-year loan deal that also gives Sparta the option to make the move permanent after that period.

    Kuchta only joined the Russian club from city rivals Slavia Prague in January this year, for EUR 5 million. He has four caps with the Czech national team.

  • Annual military show takes place at Brdy, Central Bohemia

    One of the Czech Republic’s biggest military shows for the general public, on former army territory at Brdy in Central Bohemia, takes place on Saturday. The Ground Forces Day – Mud 2022 event involves the army, police, fire service and prison service and features a flyover and displays of vintage military equipment. The annual show has been running since the early 1990s.

  • Minister: Czechs should move beyond Visegrad group

    The Czech minister for European affairs, Mikuláš Bek, says it is time for the country to develop a regular European policy and not to overly focus on the Visegrad Four group, which also includes Slovakia, Poland and Hungary.

    Speaking in an interview for Czech Radio on Saturday, Mr. Bek said that the V4 had had a clear political objective in admission to the EU and NATO. Since that was achieved the connection has weakened and Visegrad has been a communication platform among ministers, prime ministers and presidents.

    He said the group was often not a genuine four but in fact a two-plus-two or three-plus-one.

  • Pirates join call for special session on transport authority affair

    Junior government coalition party the Pirates have joined the opposition in calling for a special session of the Czech lower house to discuss a scandal centred on Prague’s transport authority. The Pirates say they want to accelerate three amendments that they say will help uncover corruption, specifically modifying records of genuine owners and the laws on conflict of interest and access to information.

    Twelve people have been charged, including a councillor from the Mayors and Independents, over suspected large-scale corruption and the affair has led to the resignation of the minister of education.

    The Mayors and Independents ran in general elections in a coalition with the Pirates, but did significantly better in terms of seats won.

  • Vladimír Balaš nominated to replace Gazdík as education minister

    Czech government coalition party the Mayors and Independents are proposing MP Vladimír Balaš as new minister of education, representatives said after a meeting of the grouping’s executive. Mr. Balaš – a constitutional lawyer – will follow Petr Gazdík, who is stepping down at the end of the month after being linked to the alleged ringleader of a criminal conspiracy.

    On Monday Mr. Balaš is due to speak with Prime Minister Petr Fiala, who will discuss the education minister’s post with President Miloš Zeman that evening.

  • Petra Kvitova defeats Beatriz Haddad Maia to reach Eastbourne final

    Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova advanced to her first grass-court final in four years by beating Beatriz Haddad Maia 7-6 (5), 6-4 at Eastbourne on Friday. Kvitova will face defending champion Jelena Ostapenko in the final. It will be her first grass court final since 2018.
