From 2026 elections in Czechia may take place on Fridays only, not spread across Fridays and Saturdays as at present. The government approved an amendment to that effect on Wednesday, the minister of the interior, Vít Rakušan, told journalists.

The legislation also states that elections to the Senate and regional and municipal councils should always be held in the first week of October.

The bill will now be discussed by Parliament.

At present Czechia is the only country in the European Union with polling spread over two days.

Former Czech prime minister Petr Nečas has received a suspended sentence and a fine of CZK 100,000 for providing false testimony in court to the benefit of his wife Jana. The verdict may be appealed.

Mr. Nečas denies any wrongdoing in the case, which centres on misuse of the military intelligence service. He says that he asked his then chief of staff – his now wife – to engage intelligence agency out of fears for his safety.

However, an earlier court ruled that she had acted independently and wanted to use information obtained for personal gain.
