    President-elect Petr Pavel has stressed the need to push ahead with pension and tax reforms in Czechia, saying he will discuss the matter in upcoming talks with government officials. Pavel said reforms in these areas cannot be delayed any longer and they need to be properly explained to the public. He said securing progress in this area was high on his list of priorities during his five-year term in office. The need for pension reform has been debated in Czechia for years, but so far no government has managed to achieve broad political consensus on it. According to experts, the tax system is also in need of an overhaul.

    The newly-elected president, Petr Pavel, has said he will ask the Supreme Audit Office to conduct an in-depth audit into the management of the Office of the President before he takes office on March 9. In an interview for TV Nova, Mr. Pavel said that in view of past irregularities he wants to make sure that there are no skeletons in the closet before he accepts responsibility for the office. The Supreme Audit Office conducted an audit into the management of the President’s Office last year and found a number of shortcomings. President Zeman’s team was also accused of shredding classified documents in violation of the rules.

    Outgoing President Miloš Zeman begins an official visit to Serbia on Monday, one of his last official duties before his second term in office expires. The president arrived on Sunday afternoon and was welcomed at Belgrade airport by his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic. The Czech head of state is due to meet with top officials, parliament representatives and business leaders. He will also attend the opening of the Czech House in Belgrade.

    In line with tradition, Mr. Zeman’s last official visit will take him to neighbouring Slovakia.

    The newly elected Czech president Petr Pavel called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday to assure him of his country’s continued support for Ukraine. Mr. Pavel said President Zelensky had thanked Czechia for its support and invited him to visit Kyiv. The next Czech head of state said he hoped to visit Ukraine together with Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová in the spring.

    The newly-elected president, Petr Pavel, has said he wants to reduce the support network and staff that the head of state enjoys at the expense of taxpayers. In an interview on Czech Television on Sunday, Mr. Pavel said the president should not be placed on a "pedestal" but should be a person people can approach.  Citing an example, Mr. Pavel said he saw no reason for a large motorcade to accompany him on trips to the regions and for him to be given the "red carpet" treatment at every stop, adding that, in general, it would be appropriate “to reconsider the level of support for the president".

    Eva Pavlová, the country’s future First Lady, has said that she intends to devote herself to charity. Speaking to the press shortly after her husband’s election victory, Ms. Pavlova said she wants to focus particularly on gender equality and discrimination against women in society. As a former single mother, she said she would like to draw attention to the problems faced by single parents. Eva Pavlová has been involved in the work of the municipality of Černouček where the couple live.

    The newly-elected Czech president Petr Pavel has said he plans to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to assure him about Czechia’s continued support. Mr. Pavel said he had already discussed a possible joint trip to Kyiv with Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová. Both  Czechia and Slovakia have actively supported Ukraine and we want President Zelensky to know that we will continue to do so, Mr. Pavel said.

    Congratulations have been pouring in from at home and abroad for the newly-elected Czech president Petr Pavel. Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová was the first foreign head of state to offer well-wishes, making a surprise appearance at Pavel’s campaign headquarters shortly after the results were announced.

    Congratulations arrived from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and President of the European Council Charles Michel who both said they were looking forward to working with the new Czech president and greatly valued his experience as a former head of NATO’s Military Committee. Greetings and well-wishes also arrived from the leaders of Germany, Poland, Austria, France and Ukraine, among others.

    Petr Pavel confirmed that, in line with tradition, his first foreign trip would be to Slovakia and he intended to follow it up with visits to all the neighbor states.

    The newly-elected Czech president, Petr Pavel, has thanked voters for the trust they placed in him, saying that his victory in the elections fills him with respect, pride and a sense of responsibility that comes with the office of head of state. In an interview for Czech public television, Mr. Pavel said he would be a president for all citizens and would work hard to deliver on his promises. The future president, who will be sworn in on March 9, will be meeting with political leaders in the coming days as he prepares to take office. In his first year, he is due to appoint seven constitutional judges and represent Czechia at a NATO summit in July.
