• Annual Ride of Kings takes place in Vlčnov

    Traditional Ride of Kings took place in the south-east Moravian village of Vlčnov on Sunday, launching the reign of the newly elected boy-king, 13-year-old Filip Šobáň.

    The centuries old tradition, which is part of the UNESCO cultural heritage list, refers to the flight of Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus from Czech King George of Poděbrady in the 15th century.

    It involves a festive ride through the village with a boy portraying the monarch dressed in a traditional women’s folk costume to conceal his identity.

  • Czech education minister calls for peace at Sudeten German Congress

    Czech Education Minister Mikuláš Bek, who is representing Czechia at the Sudeten German Congress in Regensburg, has called for work on peace.

    Mr. Bek, who greeted the assembly as dear compatriots, said that after experiencing hatred, pain and even blood, we now had to work for peace.

    After Daniel Herman and Pavel Bělobrádek, Mr. Bek is the third acting member of the Czech government to attend the congress.

    The head of the Sudeten Germans, Bernd Posselt, described Bek's speech as historic and apologised on behalf of the Sudeten Germans for their contribution to the rise of national socialism.

  • Painting by Toyen auctioned in Prague for CZK 37.44 million

    A 1950 painting called Then, Later by the Czech surrealist artist Toyen sold at auction in Prague on Sunday for CZK 37.44 million. It is the highest price paid for a painting from Toyen’s post-war period.

    Another artwork by Toyen, Emptiness, Silence from 1940, sold for CZK 18.48 million. The most expensive painting by Toyen is Circus, which was auctioned in 2021 for CZK 79.56 million.

  • Khamoro festival of Romany culture gets underway in Prague

    The 25th edition of the Khamoro festival of Romany culture gets underway in Prague on Sunday. The annual event, offering concerts, workshops, film screenings and seminars, will start with a theatre performance at the capital’s Výstaviště.

    Khamoro, named after the Romany word for sunshine, will run at venues around the city until June 3. It will culminate with a procession by Roma musicians, singers and dancers through the Old Town and Wenceslas Square.

  • Krpálek wins judo Grand Prix gold in Linz

    Czechia’s Lukáš Krpálek, the reigning Olympic champion in the men’s heavyweight, over 100 kg category, has won his fourth Grand Prix gold at the Grand Prix judo competition in Linz.

    The victory comes only two weeks after he won silver at the World Championship in Doha, where he competed in the lower weight category.

    The two-time Olympic champion, who is 32 years old, is the most successful judoka in the country’s history.

  • Memorial ceremony in honour of former political prisoners held at Jáchymov

    A commemorative event was held at the former site of a notorious labour camp at Jáchymov, west Bohemia, on Saturday to honour those who were jailed by the communist regime in Czechoslovakia.

    The annual event organised by the Confederation of Political Prisoners was attended by several dozen people, including labour camp survivors and their descendants. Also present was the Chancellor of the President, Jana Vohralíková.

    The memorial was a culmination of a two-day event that began on Friday in Slavkov and Ostrov, the sites of other labour camps for political prisoners.

  • Martin Fuksa takes gold in 1000m at Canoe Sprint World Cup

    Czechia’s Martin Fuksa won gold in the 1,000 metres event at the Canoe Sprint World Cup in Poznan, Poland, on Saturday. The 30-year old Czech finished 16 hundredths of a second ahead of Wiktor Glazunow of Poland.

    It is already the 16th victory in the series for Fuksa, who also has two World Championship titles and eleven gold medals from the European Championships.

  • Former Czech MEP Libor Rouček receives award from Sudeten Germans

    Former MEP and Vice-Chairman of the Social Democrats Libor Rouček received the Charles IV Prize for fostering understanding among European nations at the Sudeten German Congress in Regensburg on Saturday.

    The prize was also be handed over to German politician Christian Schmidt. It is the first time that the award will be given to both a Czech and a German in the same year.

    The Czech government will be represented at the congress by education minister Mikuláš Bek. He will be the first Czech acting minister to attend the event since 2017.

    Bernd Posselt, the highest political representative of the Sudeten Germans, said on Friday that relations between the two countries are flourishing.

  • Pardubice aviation fair gets underway

    The annual two-day aviation fair gets underway in the east Bohemian city of Pardubice on Saturday. The biggest highlights on the programme include air shows by Polish stunt pilot Lukasz Czepiela, Austrian skydiver and BASE jumper Felix Baumgartner and Czechia’s most famous aerobatic pilot Martin Šonka.

    The Pardubice Aviation Fair has been held since 1991 and together with the Czech International Air Fest in Hradec Králové it is the biggest showcase of aviation and aerobatics in Czechia.
