Three Czech citizens have died in an avalanche on the border of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Monday. According to the Russian News Agency TASS, the accident took place in the Jyrgalang valley in Kyrgyzstan, near the border with Kazakhstan and China. Authorities have not yet publicly released information about the identities of the victims.

Czechia is not going to send military troops to fight in Ukraine, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said in advance of his trip to Paris to attend a summit on aid to Ukraine organised by French President Emmanuel Macron. According to the Czech PM, no one need fear that the country will go to war or that some form of compulsory military conscription will be introduced.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who will also attend the summit, stated earlier that several NATO and EU member states were considering sending soldiers to Ukraine based on bilateral agreements, which, according to him, would mean an escalation of the conflict.
Mr. Fiala said that he had long held opposing views to the Slovak PM and that Mr. Fico's statements about Ukraine would undoubtedly be the subject of scrutiny at Tuesday's meeting of the Visegrad Four leaders in Prague.

The European Commission (EC) has confirmed the Czech government's decision regarding adding the psychoactive substances HHC, HHC-O and THCP to the list of substances banned in the country, the Ministry of Health has announced. The ban on the sale and possession of these substances will probably come into effect at the beginning of March. Possession of the substance will now mean a fine of up to CZK 15,000, with larger amounts also punishable by prison.
Since last summer, over 170 children and young people have ended up in hospital after overdosing on products containing HHC.

A meeting of European leaders, called by French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss aid to Ukraine, is due to take place in Paris on Monday afternoon. The Czech delegation at the summit, which is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m., will be led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala and will also include National Security Adviser Tomáš Pojar.
A total of 20 government representatives will attend, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, British Foreign Minister David Cameron, Polish President Andrzej Duda and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. While Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, considered Putin's main ally in Europe, will not be taking part, the Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is also critical of further military aid to Ukraine and described the meeting agenda as "chilling", will.
According to French officials, the summit will be about ways to help Ukraine more effectively, as Ukrainian officials pointed out on Sunday that roughly half of Western military aid is getting to the country late. However, no new military aid to Ukraine is expected to be announced.
These talks come shortly after the second anniversary of the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, at a time when continued US aid to the embattled country is uncertain.

Czechia could purchase military supplies from Australia in the future, pending further negotiations, Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský said in an interview with Australia's national broadcaster ABC on Monday. He also said that Czechia and Australia cooperate in the field of cybersecurity, a topic which he discussed in Canberra with the Australian Interior Minister Claire O'Neil.
Mr. Lipavský is currently on a working trip to the Indo-Pacific region that includes India, Australia and Japan. His next stop will be Tokyo on February 29.

The new Czech ambassador to NATO will be David Konecký, chief director of one of the departments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Czech News Agency reported on Monday. He will take over the position from the current ambassador, Jakub Landovský, in the summer. Meanwhile, the Czech ambassador to the EU will be Vladimír Bärtl, the current ambassador to Luxembourg, the Foreign Ministry announced. He will be replacing the current ambassador Edita Hrdá in Brussels.

Natural gas consumption in Czechia in 2023 fell by 10.4 percent year-on-year to 6.76 billion cubic metres, according to data by the Energy Regulatory Office published on Monday. It was the lowest figure since 1992.
According to experts, gas consumption has been steadily declining since the third quarter of 2021, following the energy crises. The drop was caused mainly by reduced consumption of households and industry.
The bulk of gas deliveries, 92 percent, flowed into Czechia via Germany, while only eight percent came from Russia. In addition to gas, the consumption of electricity and heat also declined last year.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala will hold talks with his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk on Tuesday morning ahead of a meeting of the prime ministers of the Visegrad Group, consisting of Czechia, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary.
It is the first meeting of the V4 Group, since the change in the government in Slovakia and Hungary. The main topics on the agenda will be EU enlargement, the situation in Ukraine, regional cooperation, defence cooperation, energy and migration.
