The Czech Centres network is set to close three of its 26 branches, a spokesperson said on Wednesday, confirming a report by news outlet Seznam Zprávy. The Czech Centres in Stockholm, Milan and Tbilisi will shut their doors for good this summer.
The move is due to a reassessment of priorities by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which runs the international cultural relations network, and a linked cut in spending. Seznam Zprávy said the reduction in the Czech Centres’ budget was the sharpest in many years.

Renovation work on the National Theatre’s New Stage building, which began on Wednesday, disproves claims that the government is skimping on the arts, the minister of culture, Oto Klempíř, told reporters.
The Ministry of Culture’s budget for 2026 is CZK 17.6 billion, CZK 1 billion less than last year, and cuts to the performing arts and other areas have sparked criticism and protests.
The CZK 1.8 billion overhaul of the ice cube-like structure and an administrative building is expected to take two years.

The Republic of Ireland’s footballers have arrived in Prague ahead of a World Cup playoffs semi-final clash with Czechia on Thursday evening. Unusually the Irish squad arrived two days ahead of the game. The Czech team, meanwhile, trained behind closed doors at the Fortuna Arena, where the match will be held.
The winners will face either Denmark or North Macedonia next Tuesday for a place at the World Cup in North America this summer.

A district court in Pardubice has placed two suspects in custody over a terrorist attack and participation in a terrorist group linked to Friday’s deliberate arson of a hall at the LPP Holding arms factory. The judge cited risks of flight, collusion and reoffending, police said on X.
According to reports, the suspects are a man and a woman. Judge Karel Gobernac said the man, a foreign national, is charged with terrorism, while the woman is Czech. Neither admitted guilt and both largely refused to testify. They face up to 20 years in prison or an exceptional sentence.

Public broadcasters Czech Television (ČT) and Czech Radio (ČRo) would lose about a third of their income if part of TV and radio licence fees is abolished as planned by the governing coalition. That would mean a loss of over two billion crowns for ČT and up to 800 million crowns for ČRo, both institutions told CTK.
If approved, the proposal would cost them more than they gained from last year’s fee increase. ČT director Hynek Chudárek warned the broadcaster could face collapse, while ČRo director René Zavoral said it would be an extraordinary blow to its finances.
Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Tomio Okamura (SPD) announced a bill to abolish fees for seniors over 75, companies, young people under 26, and people with disabilities, effective from mid-year.

Police in the Czech Republic will introduce security measures in connection with Friday’s fire in Pardubice and the situation in the Middle East ahead of Easter and other holidays. The measures will cover the protection of cultural, sports and social events, transport hubs and the international airport, and will also include road checks and search operations. Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar (ANO) said this in the Chamber of Deputies.
According to him, patrols in ballistic protection and armed with automatic weapons will also be deployed in places with large crowds.
Easter Monday falls on April 6 this year, with Good Friday on April 3. Two additional public holidays will occur in May, on Friday May 1 and May 8.
The Czech Republic is currently at the second level of a four-level terrorism threat scale, indicating a moderate level of risk.

The proposal to exempt people over 75 and companies from Czech TV (ČT) and Radio (ČRo) fees is not yet ready, and coalition MPs will not present it today. Vice-Chairman Patrik Nacher (ANO) emphasized that any revenue shortfall will not exceed the funding increase from the last amendment.
The fee exemptions, expected to take effect mid-year, were initially announced by Chamber Speaker Tomio Okamura (SPD). From next year, the coalition plans to fully reform the ČT and ČRo funding system and eliminate fees entirely.

The Czech Football Association (FACR) has requested police intervention amid a corruption investigation involving football matches linked to betting. FACR President David Trunda emphasized at a press conference today that no members of the association’s leadership are implicated.
In connection with the probe, the FACR Ethics Commission has opened 47 disciplinary proceedings. The investigation involves top-division club Karviná, its players Samuel Šigut and Matěj Hýbl—whose activities have been suspended—and the mayor of Karviná, Jan Wolf. Karviná is the only top-league club implicated, according to an official notice.
Since this morning, several dozen individuals have been detained, and police have conducted searches of homes, offices, and other properties, Olomouc High Prosecutor Radim Dragoun reported.
