Icy conditions seriously complicated traffic in South Moravia on Friday. Traffic police and firefighters dealt with more than 150 traffic accidents and around 20 additional traffic-related incidents by midday and problems continued to pile up in the afternoon hours, police spokesman Bohumil Malášek told the Czech News Agency (ČTK).

South Moravian emergency services said they had activated a trauma plan because of the high number of crashes and injuries. Dozens of pedestrians were injured after slipping on icy pavements.

Public transport in Brno and regional bus services were delayed, with some routes suspended entirely. Long traffic jams formed on motorways as a result of accidents, and some road sections were completely closed while the aftermath was being cleared.

The D1 motorway was closed for about four hours near Vyškov in the direction of Brno.

Meteorologists have issued an ice warning for the eastern part of the country valid up until Saturday morning.

The Czech Republic has received an invitation to join the Board of Peace established by U.S. President Donald Trump, government spokeswoman Karla Mráčková told the Czech News Agency (ČTK). She said  the Czech Foreign Ministry is currently preparing a position for the government.

Foreign Minister Petr Macinka (Motorists), said on Monday before the official invitation was received, said the advertised cost of longer-term membership was unrealistic given the possibilities of the Czech state budget.

President Petr Pavel noted that the Czech Republic could only respond to the invitation when it had more information about the council’s mandate and operation. “So far, we know almost nothing about it,” he said.

Trump formally established the Board together with invited leaders on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Tuesday.

The European Union agrees it must be prepared to react if the United States changes its rhetoric or introduces measures against the bloc, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, the ANO party leader, said after an extraordinary EU summit in Brussels. Leaders discussed the state of transatlantic relations, with Babiš stressing that cooperation with the United States remains crucial. Tensions rose after US President Donald Trump revived talk of acquiring Greenland and announced tariffs affecting Denmark and other EU states, before later stepping back following talks with NATO chief Mark Rutte. Babiš called the shift positive, noting Denmark seeks a direct role in any talks.

President Petr Pavel says Czechia must present and stick to a realistic plan to increase defence spending in order to remain a credible ally in NATO. Speaking during a visit to the Olomouc Region, Pavel said he wants to discuss the issue with Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, the ANO party leader, Finance Minister Alena Schillerová(ANO) and Defence Minister Jaromír Zůna (SPD). The plan is to be submitted at the NATO summit in Turkey in July. Pavel warned that failure to act could undermine Czechia’s standing, noting that most NATO members already meet or exceed the alliance’s defence spending targets.

Prague city councillors have approved new emissions rules for taxis, allowing only cars meeting the Euro 6d standard to operate from August next year. Vehicles must have been first registered in 2021 or later. However, the council rejected a proposal that would have limited taxi services exclusively to electric or hydrogen-powered cars from 2030. Supporters of the regulation cited a sharp rise in taxi numbers and the ageing vehicle fleet, which contribute to higher emissions. Opponents, including the ANO party and the Spolu bloc, warned that charging infrastructure would not be ready in time and that an electric-only rule would hurt smaller drivers, unlike large platforms such as Uber or Bolt.

The detention of a Chinese national on suspicion of espionage in Czech Republic is a far more serious step than summoning an ambassador, Prime Minister and ANO party leader Andrej Babiš said on Thursday. He questioned the handling of the case by the foreign ministry under Jan Lipavský, after media reported the suspect held a journalist’s accreditation. Police arrested the man over alleged activity for Chinese intelligence, marking the first use of the offence of unlawful activity for a foreign power. While Babiš said such suspects are usually expelled, he added authorities must have had reasons for detention. Lipavský countered that his ministry lacked concrete information at the time and criticised plans to abolish the offence.

Foreigners accounted for ten percent of the population of Czech Republic in 2024, up 0.2 percentage points year on year, according to the Czech Statistical Office. The highest share was recorded in Prague, where foreigners made up 25.3 percent of residents. Population growth last year was driven mainly by migration, while natural increase was recorded only in the capital. The interior ministry estimates that nearly 1.11 million foreigners were living legally in the country by the end of September, most of them Ukrainians. Officials say foreign workers are essential for the Czech labour market amid persistent labour shortages.

Czech Republic has once again been officially recognised as free of African swine fever after three years, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). The status is important for exports of pork and related products to non-EU markets, said Zbyněk Semerád, head of the State Veterinary Administration of the Czech Republic. The Liberec Region was the only area where the disease was detected in wild boar, first appearing near the Polish border in late 2022. No commercial pig farms were affected. Although the country is now disease-free, some preventive measures and enhanced monitoring remain in place in the Frýdlant area.

A return to normal relations with Russia is highly complicated as long as Moscow continues its aggression against Ukraine, Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka told foreign ambassadors in Prague on Wednesday. He said the Czech government supports diplomatic efforts to end the war and thanked Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha for hosting him during a recent visit to Kyiv. Macinka said Czechia wants to restore a standard level of relations with China, comparable to ties maintained by many European Union states. He stressed that Europe and the transatlantic space remain Czechia’s key geopolitical framework and said foreign policy would move away from moralising rhetoric toward pragmatic diplomacy, with greater emphasis on economic ties, including in Asia and Africa.
