European Union governments have agreed to limit the movement of Russian diplomats within the bloc, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday, describing the move as a response to a surge in sabotage attempts allegedly linked to Russian agents operating under diplomatic cover.
Under the proposed rules, Russian diplomats stationed in EU member states would be required to notify host governments of their travel plans before crossing into another EU country.
The initiative — championed by the Czech Republic — forms part of a new package of sanctions being prepared by Brussels in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The measures require unanimous approval. According to the FT, Hungary, the last EU member to oppose the plan, has now lifted its veto, paving the way for adoption.

Filip Turek of the Motorists party has confirmed that the party is interested in three specific ministerial posts in the emerging cabinet. In an interview for Czech Television, he said that the party would like to see its leader Petr Macinka as the country’s environment minister and its newly elected MP Oto Klempíř as culture minister. Turek himself is aspiring to the post of foreign minister.
While the Motorists are seeking maximum involvement in government decision-making, Turek emphasized that policy alignment with ANO and SPD remains the party’s chief priority in coalition talks.
Meanwhile, SPD (Freedom and Direct Democracy Party) leader Tomio Okamura has said his party would like to select experts for one or two ministerial posts, while he himself is aspiring to the post of lower house speaker.
Negotiations are still underway.

The 66th International Engineering Fair opens at the main exhibition grounds in Brno on Tuesday. Over the next four days, the venue will host over 1,300 companies from 42 countries, half of them from abroad. The largest delegations are from Germany, Italy, Slovakia, and Switzerland, with strong representation also from technology powerhouses China and Japan.
This year’s key themes are the digitalization and robotization of heavy industry, including the use of artificial intelligence. Organizers say the fair aims to help engineering firms explore new markets and sectors as the traditional automotive industry faces a downturn.
This year’s event runs alongside Transport and Logistics and Envitech, a fair focused on environmental technologies.

The three parties that are negotiating the set-up of the next Czech government — ANO, SPD and the Motorists — have said that they will refuse to introduce the EU’s new carbon emission trading system for households and transport, due to take effect in January 2027.
ANO deputy leader Karel Havlíček told reporters that the future government would immediately notify the European Commission of its decision. Havlíček said the emissions fee was “socially unacceptable,” since it would burden families with thousands of crowns in higher energy and fuel costs. He added that the government would rather risk legal action and fines from Brussels than pass the costs on to citizens.

This year’s judicial pay freeze has been struck down by the Constitutional Court, which on Tuesday annulled the fixed salary base and criticized the government’s repeated “unsystematic interventions.” The state must now retroactively compensate judges, a move the Justice Ministry earlier estimated at over CZK 800 million, plus interest and legal costs. The ministry said it respects the court’s decision and expects the total costs to reach CZK 620 million.
Under the standard calculation, the base salary should have exceeded CZK 130,000, but the government had capped it at CZK 121,685 for 2024 to meet fiscal savings targets — a move many judges called unconstitutional.
