Czech counterintelligence chief Michal Koudelka has warned that Russia could step up its operations against NATO countries in the coming months.

Speaking at an international conference in the Chamber of Deputies, the head of the Security Information Service (BIS) said Russia was pursuing hostile activities aimed at weakening Western democracies from within, including the Czech Republic, and undermining the cohesion of international organisations, particularly NATO and the EU.

He said possible Russian operations could include sabotage attacks on facilities supporting Ukraine, drone or missile strikes on weapons depots intended for Ukraine and, in an extreme scenario, a limited military operation against a NATO member state.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš on Monday rebuked the leader of the junior coalition party Freedom and Direct Democracy Tomio Okamura for commenting on European affairs, which the prime minister said were none of his concern.

Speaking to journalists, Okamura said that at the upcoming EU summit Mr. Babiš should push for the EU to hold talks with Russia on reaching a peace agreement . “He has no business interfering in this,” Babiš told reporters later, adding that Okamura is not a member of the cabinet.

According to the prime minister, the summit’s main agenda will be European competitiveness and the EU’s multiannual financial framework.

Mr. Babis earlier noted that he was interest to see how EU leaders would respond to President Trump’s deal to import diesel from Russia, which he described as a major slap in the face for Europe.

Czechia should urge EU leaders to negotiate with Russia on peace in Ukraine at this week’s summit in Brussels, Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) leader Tomio Okamura said on Monday.

Speaking after a meeting of the governing coalition of ANO, SPD and the Motorists, Okamura said Czechia should not support the war but instead push for peace talks with Moscow, following the example of the United States. He added that his proposal had met with no objections, including from Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO).

Asked specifically whether Prime Minister Babiš shared his position, Okamura said he could not speak on the prime minister’s behalf, but noted that Babiš had not opposed the proposal at the coalition meeting.

The environmental organisation Hnutí Duha plans to seek court enforcement over an apology published on Facebook by MP Filip Turek of the Motorists’ party. It says he failed to comply with a court order because the apology did not meet the ruling’s requirements.

In April, Turek blamed the organisation for blocking a dam project, claiming this had contributed to several deaths during floods. He also described its members as parasites who needed to be exterminated.

Although Turek published an apology on Facebook, he added further remarks targeting the organisation. Hnutí Duha considers these additional comments an attack and says the apology is insufficient. It argues that the court ordered Turek to apologise, not to use the opportunity to launch further criticism.

The National Coalition for Combating Drought will meet on Monday to assess the hydrological situation, including measures taken so far and further steps to address the ongoing extreme drought. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) will join experts at the meeting.

Babiš called the meeting a day after reports that the Husinec reservoir in South Bohemia had become the first Czech dam to dry up. On Tuesday, the South Bohemian Region declared a drought emergency across the region, allowing it greater flexibility in managing water releases from reservoirs.

Water shortages have also been declared on the Vltava and Elbe rivers in Central Bohemia.

However, all reservoirs supplying drinking water remain sufficiently full, with no threat to supplies, Petr Kubala, head of the Vltava River Basin Authority, told the Czech News Agency.
