Foreigners accounted for ten percent of the population of Czech Republic in 2024, up 0.2 percentage points year on year, according to the Czech Statistical Office. The highest share was recorded in Prague, where foreigners made up 25.3 percent of residents. Population growth last year was driven mainly by migration, while natural increase was recorded only in the capital. The interior ministry estimates that nearly 1.11 million foreigners were living legally in the country by the end of September, most of them Ukrainians. Officials say foreign workers are essential for the Czech labour market amid persistent labour shortages.

Czech Republic has once again been officially recognised as free of African swine fever after three years, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). The status is important for exports of pork and related products to non-EU markets, said Zbyněk Semerád, head of the State Veterinary Administration of the Czech Republic. The Liberec Region was the only area where the disease was detected in wild boar, first appearing near the Polish border in late 2022. No commercial pig farms were affected. Although the country is now disease-free, some preventive measures and enhanced monitoring remain in place in the Frýdlant area.

A return to normal relations with Russia is highly complicated as long as Moscow continues its aggression against Ukraine, Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka told foreign ambassadors in Prague on Wednesday. He said the Czech government supports diplomatic efforts to end the war and thanked Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha for hosting him during a recent visit to Kyiv. Macinka said Czechia wants to restore a standard level of relations with China, comparable to ties maintained by many European Union states. He stressed that Europe and the transatlantic space remain Czechia’s key geopolitical framework and said foreign policy would move away from moralising rhetoric toward pragmatic diplomacy, with greater emphasis on economic ties, including in Asia and Africa.

Czech foreign policy will no longer be based on moralising rhetoric or social media posts instead of diplomacy, Foreign Minister Petr Macinka told Czech ambassadors on Thursday. He said Czechia wants to restore a “standard level” of relations with China, comparable to ties maintained by many other European Union member states. According to Macinka, the government aims for a more pragmatic and interest-driven foreign policy, focused on dialogue and traditional diplomacy. He said relations with Beijing should reflect Czech economic and security interests while remaining consistent with the country’s commitments within the EU and its allies.

Czech jet aircraft manufacturer Aero Vodochody plans to offer Ukraine its new L-39 Skyfox aircraft instead of older L-159 jets, which Prague has said it cannot spare. President Petr Pavel recently confirmed that Ukraine had asked whether it could buy Czech L-159s, but the government replied that the air force still needs them and that new L-159s are no longer being produced. Aero says the L-39 Skyfox is cheaper to operate and suitable for tasks such as training, light combat missions and counter-drone operations. The company has already delivered Skyfox jets to Vietnam and is supplying Hungary and Czech state firm LOM Praha, while seeking new contracts in Africa.

Greenland is an integral part of Denmark, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, the leader of the ANO party, said on Wednesday, welcoming a shift in rhetoric by US President Donald Trump. Trump had recently renewed talk of acquiring Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, and announced extra tariffs on Danish and other European goods. He later backed down after talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, with allies agreeing to work together on Arctic security. Babiš said NATO cooperation was essential given growing Russian and Chinese interest in the region.

The Czech team for the Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo will number 113 athletes, matching the country’s record set at the 2022 Games in Beijing. The figure was approved by the Czech Olympic Committee and may still change slightly due to quota reallocations. The large delegation is mainly due to the participation of both men’s and women’s ice hockey teams. The squad includes four Olympic medallists, led by speed skater Martina Sáblíková and skier and snowboarder Ester Ledecká.

European members of NATO must be capable of guaranteeing their own security even in the event of disagreements with the United States, Czech President Petr Pavel said on Thursday. Speaking during a debate with students in Olomouc, Pavel said the European Union has sufficient economic and military capacity, but must work harder to become a strong and respected global player. Pavel also commented on US President Donald Trump, saying his unpredictable style should not be seen only as a threat. Likening it to an “Arab bazaar”, Pavel said Trump’s tactics may be shocking but have often pushed Europe to act, especially on defence and security.

Unpredictable behaviour by US President Donald Trump should not be seen only negatively or as a threat, Czech President Petr Pavel said on Wednesday. Speaking during a debate with students in Olomouc, Pavel likened Trump’s political style to an “Arab bazaar,” marked by exaggerated opening positions and tough bargaining. While such an approach may be shocking, Pavel said it has often produced results and helped spur Europe into action, particularly in the areas of security and defence. According to the Czech president, Trump’s tactics have sometimes forced European countries to take greater responsibility for their own security.
