Czech authorities have responded to European Commission concerns over Prime Minister Andrej Babiš's (ANO) potential conflict of interest, Czech Radio's news website iROZHLAS.cz has learned. Brussels previously said transferring Agrofert shares into the RSVP Trust did not sufficiently resolve the issue, partly because family members could benefit. The Ministry for Regional Development says its response outlines safeguards preventing EU subsidies from being granted where conflicts of interest are identified. Babiš maintains he has severed all ties with Agrofert and denies any conflict. The Commission has already blocked reimbursements for some Agrofert-related projects.

Health officials in South Moravia warn that the hepatitis A outbreak could intensify this autumn as infections have started rising again after a temporary decline in August. The region recorded 502 cases between January and September, with Brno and its surroundings most affected. Regional public health official Renata Ciupek said increased travel and crowded public transport hubs were contributing to the spread. Authorities are urging people to get vaccinated, particularly those working in restaurants and catering, and to observe strict hand hygiene. Meanwhile, health officials say the influenza situation remains calm, although other seasonal respiratory infections are expected to increase.

The Husinec reservoir in South Bohemia has become the first in Czechia to exhaust its usable water reserves amid an extreme drought. Its water level has fallen seven metres below normal, forcing operators to reduce outflow to match the incoming water. The reservoir had previously been releasing additional water to maintain flow in the Blanice River. Meanwhile, authorities have declared a water shortage on the Vltava and Labe rivers in Central Bohemia. Minimum outflow from the Vltava Cascade has been reduced to protect water levels at the Slapy and Orlík reservoirs. The measure will remain in effect until April 30 next year.

A water shortage has been declared on the Vltava and Labe rivers in Central Bohemia, the Czech News Agency reported. Due to the prolonged unfavorable hydrological situation, the regional commission has allowed the minimum outflow from the Vltava Cascade at the Vrané waterworks to be reduced from 35 to 20 cubic meters per second. The measure will remain in effect, until April 30 next year.

The move is intended to slow the decline in water levels at the Slapy reservoir and potentially also at the Orlík reservoir. Permitted water withdrawals will remain unrestricted for the time being, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Vltava River Basin Authority and the Central Bohemian Region said in a press release.

Culture Minister Oto Klempíř on Wednesday criticized Czech writer Radka Denemarková’s appearance at Tuesday’s opening ceremony of the Frankfurt Book Fair. Speaking to a Czech News Agency reporter, he said he could get over anonymous booing and shouts from the audience, but Denemarková’s criticism had upset him.

According to Klempíř, the Czech literary scene and Czech writers have the ministry’s full support and must surely be aware of the fact.

In her speech, Denemarková said that “culture ministers who destroy culture come and go, but literature remains.” Her remark was met with loud applause from the audience. She also brought up Klempíř’s cooperation with the communist secret police (StB) in the 1980s. Denemarková said she did not want to respond to Klempíř’s comments.
