Czech tennis player Kateřina Siniaková has secured her third doubles title at the Australian Open, marking the tenth Grand Slam title of her career. Together with her American partner Taylor Townsend, the top-seeded duo lived up to expectations, defeating the Taiwanese-Latvian pairing of Hsieh Su-Wei and Jelena Ostapenko in a gripping final.

Siniaková and Townsend needed two hours and 29 minutes to overcome the tournament’s third seeds, Hsieh and Ostapenko, with a scoreline of 6:2, 6:7, 6:3 in Melbourne on Sunday. The victory gave them their second Grand Slam title as a pair. For Siniaková, it marked her 12th Grand Slam final, ten of which she has converted into titles.

After the match, Siniaková spoke to Czech Radio, expressing her emotions:

“I feel great. Of course, I'm very happy that it went well, because it was a tough match, especially mentally. So I am really proud of how we handled it, how we fought, and that we won.”

Siniaková’s doubles journey began more than a decade ago. She claimed her first WTA doubles title in 2012 in Tashkent, alongside Aleksandra Krunicova. By then, she had already won three Grand Slam girls’ doubles titles with her long-time partner Barbora Krejčíková. Her first Grand Slam final in adult doubles came in 2017 at the US Open with Lucie Hradecká. However, at that point, she did not yet see herself as a doubles specialist.

“Singles was my priority back then. It was Lucie Hradecká who pulled me through to my first Grand Slam doubles final. After that, my doubles career took off, and I still can’t believe it.”

In 2018, she reunited with Krejčíková to form one of the most successful partnerships in tennis history. Together, they captured seven Grand Slam titles, an Olympic gold medal, and the WTA Finals trophy.

Siniaková has also excelled with international partners, winning her eighth Grand Slam title with Coco Gauff and her last two with Townsend. Speaking about Townsend, Siniaková told this to Czech Radio:

“I think we complement each other really well. We’ve played some great matches here, and I believe we can adapt to any situation on the court. It doesn’t matter where we stand—it helps that we keep our opponents guessing. I’m grateful that we’re continuing to grow and improve together.”

With this Australian Open triumph, Siniaková and Townsend improved their Grand Slam match record to 16-1, dropping just two sets in the tournament. Siniaková also solidified her position as the world’s number one in doubles, adding another impressive achievement to her career.
