Siniaková named Czech tennis player of year for first time
Kateřina Siniaková has won the Golden Canary award for Czech tennis player of the year for the first time. The 26-year-old is currently world number one in doubles.
The 30th edition of the glitzy Golden Canary tennis awards were held in Prague on Monday night, with the winners selected by an expert poll organized by the magazine Tenis and the sport’s governing body in the country.
For the first time the main prize for player of the year went to Kateřina Siniaková, who took 100 of the 162 points available. She is currently ranked first in the world in women’s doubles.
The 26-year-old took over the crown from her doubles partner Barbora Krejčíková, with whom she won three Grand Slams this year – the Australian Open, the US Open and Wimbledon – to complete a career Grand Slam.
Siniaková and Krejčíková were also named Czech doubles pair of the year at Monday’s awards ceremony.
Siniaková told reporters that it was a huge honour to win the prize and to be included in the glittering list of winners.
