Czech tennis player Siniaková secures her first Sunshine Double in Miami

Taylor Townsend and Kateřina Siniaková at the tournament in Miami

Kateřina Siniaková won the doubles title in Miami, claiming the so-called Sunshine Double for the first time in her career. Together with American partner Taylor Townsend, they defeated the Italian duo Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini 7–6, 6–1 in the final on a hard court, following up on their triumph from another prestigious tournament in Indian Wells two weeks earlier.

Siniaková and Townsend, seeded second, won the match—which was interrupted for several hours due to rain—in 1 hour and 19 minutes of play.

They defeated top seeds Errani and Paolini for the second time in a row, having beaten them 6–2, 6–2 in Indian Wells. They have now recorded ten consecutive victories. The reigning Australian Open champions and 2023 Wimbledon winners became the sixth pair to achieve the Sunshine Double in women’s doubles.

Previously, this feat was accomplished by Jana Novotná and Helena Suková (1990), Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs (2002), Raymond with Samantha Stosur (2006–07), Martina Hingis with Sania Mirza (2015), and Elise Mertens with Aryna Sabalenka (2019).

First Miami Title

Siniaková won the Miami doubles title for the first time. She had previously reached the final in 2018, when she and Barbora Krejčíková lost to the Australian-American duo Ashleigh Barty and Coco Vandeweghe 2–6, 1–6.

Siniaková and Townsend dropped just one set in Miami, having to come from behind in the semifinals against the Canadian-Brazilian pair Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani. With her 35th career doubles title, Siniaková will remain world No. 2 in the doubles rankings.

The Czech-American duo faced their toughest moments in the first set. They twice came back from a break down and saved three set points at 4–5. At 6–5 and 0–40, the match was interrupted by rain. After the restart, the set went to a tie-break, which Siniaková and Townsend won convincingly 7–0.

The second set followed the same pattern as the end of the first. From 0–1 down, Siniaková and Townsend allowed their opponents only six more points, won the next six games in a row, and closed out the match with a love game on return.
