Lower house overrides Senate veto on bill restricting president’s powers

The lower house has again approved a government coalition proposal to abolish the president’s power to appoint and dismiss heads of permanent missions to international organisations. MPs overrode a Senate veto, which argued that the change amounted to an unconstitutional interference with the president’s powers.

President Petr Pavel argued that he saw no reason for the change. Opponents have already said they will challenge the legislation at the Constitutional Court.
