MPs reapprove controversial civil service law

The lower house on Tuesday also overrode a Senate veto on a new civil service law that would make it easier to replace state officials and bringing employment rules closer to the Labour Code.

Senators and opposition MPs have warned that the law could lead to the politicisation and destabilisation of the civil service.

The legislation would scrap a three-month period during which departing officials can receive up to 80 percent of their salary. Instead, they would leave immediately with severance pay. If a position is abolished as part of a restructuring of the civil service, the state could dismiss the official immediately.
