Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša wins classical music “Oscar”

Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša has been named Artist of the Year for 2026 by the International Classical Music Awards. Often described as the “Oscar of classical music,” the honour recognises his exceptional international career and his work with leading orchestras.

The jury of the International Classical Music Awards, made up of editors-in-chief of leading music magazines and representatives of major cultural institutions, praised Hrůša’s ability to combine a deep understanding of musical scores with intense expression and a clear artistic vision.

The ICMA jury also presented a special award to the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, which Hrůša has led as Chief Conductor since 2016, praising its distinctive sound, artistic quality, and growing international reputation under his leadership.

Speaking to Czech Radio, Hrůša described the award as a shared achievement with the Bamberger Symphoniker, adding that the connection between the orchestra’s honour and his own gives the recognition added significance.

“It is true that linking this award for me personally with the award for the orchestra creates the best possible impression, because a conductor without an orchestra, without collaborators, can achieve nothing. Here, their artistry and mine come together in a beautiful synthesis.

“What comes through most clearly, I think, is the working method I believe in: rehearsing calmly and consistently, with enthusiasm and commitment, strict but kind. Then performing in concerts and on recordings with relaxation and the greatest possible enjoyment. After ten years, this approach has led to this award.”

At 44, Jakub Hrůša is one of the most in-demand conductors of his generation. He is only the second Czech to conduct the Royal Opera in London and is set to become Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Czech Philharmonic from the 2028/2029 season.

The ICMA honour adds to a growing list of accolades. Hrůša was recently named Conductor of the Year 2026 by Musical America and has also received a state decoration for merit from the Czech president. He says he does not compare awards, seeing them instead as reassurance that his work speaks to others.

“I say this every time, and it is the absolute truth: when a person strives for something over a long period, they may feel they are working in an authentic way, but they are not always sure whether what they believe in truly reaches other people.

“This is the best possible reassurance. These awards show that the credo of teamwork with orchestras resonates not only with expert juries, but also with listeners, who applaud in concert halls and opera houses. They are no less important.”

Jakub Hrůša and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra will host the official ICMA awards ceremony on March 18, with a gala concert in Bamberg.
