Jakub Hrůša: the most sought-after Czech conductor in the world today
Known for his deep musical insight, commanding presence on the podium and passionate advocacy for Czech repertoire Jakub Hrůša is undeniably the most sought-after Czech conductor in the world today.
Born in Brno in 1981, Jakub Hrůša studied conducting in Prague and quickly rose to international prominence, earning accolades for his interpretations of Dvořák, Janáček, and Martinů. Since 2016, he has served as chief conductor of the Bamberg Symphony, with whom he has garnered numerous awards, including the German Record Critics’ Prize. He is also principal guest conductor of the Czech Philharmonic and will take the helm as its chief conductor and music director in the 2028/29 season.
In addition, Hrůša becomes music director of London’s Royal Opera House in 2025, further cementing his status as one of the most sought-after conductors on the global stage. His artistry combines intellectual rigor with emotional depth, making him a leading voice in both operatic and symphonic music.
For this week’s Sunday Music we have selected a recording of Antonin Dvořák’s Piano Concerto in G minor with Jakub Hrůša leading the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. The recording was voted “Best Concerto Recording of the Year” in 2020 by BBC Music Magazine. The album was released in September 2019 by Czech label Supraphon in co-production with Bavarian broadcaster BR-Klassik.
