Fiala’s cabinet resigns after new parliament convenes

The government of Prime Minister Petr Fiala (Civic Democratic Party, ODS) has approved its resignation at its Thursday meeting. The move follows the inaugural session of the newly elected Chamber of Deputies, as required by the constitution. President Petr Pavel is expected to accept the resignation and authorize current ministers to remain in office until a new cabinet is appointed. The formation of the next government is now being negotiated by ANO party leader Andrej Babiš with the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party and the Motorists’ party. Fiala, whose cabinet was appointed in December 2021, said he would hand the resignation to the president personally before evening.
